Notes
a. Continued:   Martha and her twin, Mary, were born after the death of Michael BEAVERS and, since he had been in and out of a Georgia hospital for years, some in the family doubted they were his children. Others insist the timing was okay. Unless we can find an exact date of death for Michael, we may never know. However, Alabama law required (and still does) that a child born during the marriage is legally the offspring of the father. I just hope she actually was. She was 4'9" and never weighed a 100 pounds in her life. She looked very much like an Indian squaw. She loved music and after somebody finally gave her a radio, she often danced around her house with her broom. She told me that she could not read and write when she was married. She and Richard lived near a school. She said she "stole" corn from his crib to buy a slate and "slipped off" to the school house. She learned to read and write before he caught her and made her stop.
b. Note:   r whom she was named, so changed her name to "Mattie Brooks" in her teens. There is nothing on record about that. Before birth certificates and driver's licenses, it was fairly easy to call yourself whatever you pleased.
Note:   She was named Martha Lucinda at her birth, but did not like the aunt fo
c. Note:   This compiler was standing beside her bed when she breathed her last.
