a. Continued:   He was about 5'8" tall and always slim. In his last few years he became absolutely skinny. He had black hair with a slight natural wave - he never got completely gray but his hair thinned considerably on top during his last years. His eyes were clear blue. His skin was always tan from working outdoors and I thought he was the most handsome man on earth. He inherited his father's dry humor and could take almost any situation and find something funny in it. He had custody of his children during a period when divorce was almost unheard of, let alone single fatherhood. He did the best he could with us, but he really did not know what to do with me. He had never even had a sister and girls were rather foreign to him. We all got through it somehow, though, none the worse for wear. He and Bertha were separated the week after Christmas in 1945 and were divorced in 1948. He married Frances Mitchell in the summer of 1963.
