Note: D.P.'s father, Daniel, and other uncles began moving away from Newberry, SC even though all were given land even before the death of Johannes. The eldest son, Joshua, settled in Conyers, Ga. before 1840. His son, John Pressley, (first cousin of D. P.) settled in Lithonia and must have influenced Daniel Pressley's decision to move to Georgia. One month after his father's death in Ninety Six, SC, Daniel entered the Atlanta Medical College March 14, 1857 listing his professors as Means of chemistry, Boring of obstetrics, Brown of anatomy, J. G. Westmoreland of therapeutics and materia medica; W. F. Westmoreland of surgery; Logan of physiology; Jones of practice. D. P. practiced in DeKalb Co. He moved to Acworth, Ga (Cobb Co.) shortly before July 1859 where his son, Rosco, died of dropsy. Resided in Cobb Co. 370 20th Dist. P.O. Acworth in 1860 Cens. He died in siege of Vicksburg. Name listed under Morbut in CSA documents at Ga. archives in Atlanta. Mentioned as private, later assistant surgeon with Co. C. 41st. Ga. Regiment. Enlisted April 10, 1862 at Acworth. CSA records show money owed him was applied for in DeKalb Co., Ga. Court of Ordinary by Jacob Braswell, a brother of Sarah Ann B., D.P.'s wife. This info contained in CSA military records. From a letter from Vicksburg National Military Park, R. K. Rundell, superintendent, dated April 27, 1961 to Gaines Hobbs: Our records reveal the name 'D. P. Murbet', Hospital Stewart, and give the date of his death as being June 30, 1863. They do not state the company he was with, nor do they tell the cause of death. This information comes from the 'Record Book of Confederate Soldiers' in the United Daughters of the Confederacy Case in the Old Court House Museum, Vicksburg, Mississippi." The date of death is same as written in pencil in Daniel Pressley Marbut's ledger. Vicksburg CSA dead in City Cemetery identify 1600 out of 5,000. Claims of deceased officers and soldiers from Georgia filed Dec. 3, 1863 in the DeKalb Co. Court of Ordinary by Jacob Braswell. Note: Lithonia DeKalb Co. Ga. Dec. 1, 1863...."Mr. Tayor: Please send to me at his post office (Lithonia, Ga.) the amount due Doctor Daniel P. Marbut, or return papers with proper endorsements, and as I am informed I can have the monies due said Daniel P. Marbut, deceased, in the City of Atlanta, Ga......Yours, Jacob Braswell." From CSA records and applications for funds in Ga. State Archives. Look up under Morbut, Daniel Pressley Co. C., 41st Ga. Regiment. In subsequent filings Braswell posted $1600 bond and presented the court a statement that D. P. Marbut died of chronic dysentery "on or about the last day of June, 1963 at Vicksburg, Mississippi." Marriage recorded in DeKalb Co., GA Book A, page 343, 1846-1856.
