The Faust/Foust families of Paint Township, Somerset County have descended from an ancestor named Balthser, or Baltzer, Faust who was the son of Johnannes and Catherine Wilkes Faust and was born in 1758 in Lancaster County, pennsylvania.
On July 30, 1781 Balthser married Eva Fissel daughter of Anna Maria Diehl and Frederick Fissel. Frederick was a miller by trade in Shrewsbury Township, York County, and the Fissel Church was built on a portion of his homestead. This church today is a Shrewsbury Township historical landmark.
Both Baltser and his brother, John Faust owned land named "Settler's Mills" where they operated a grist mill, a saw mill, a fulling mill, and a carding machine.
Baltser and Wife, Eva, became the parents of 10 children and several of their offspring came into Somerset County and became the direct ancestors of many with that surname residing here today.
Catherine Faust, the oldest of the girls, was born in 1781 in Peach Bottom Twp and married David Shaffer. Elizabeth, born in 1783, married John George Berkebile. Both the Shaffer and Berkebile families migrated to the Shade-Paint Twp area where these families share a common ancestor the Faust families.
Eve Faust, born 1795, was married to a Fitzgerald and then to John Oaks and had a family of 7 children in Somerset County before they moved to Iowas in 1843. Susan married Samuel Oaks, son of Michael Oaks of Somerset County. The two sons of Balthazar Faust who came in the PaintTwp region were John born 1785 and Frederick born 1789 and from these two sprang those bearing the Faust name today.
  Other childrenb were:
 Balthasar FAUST, b. 1793
Daniel FAUST b: 7 MAR 1798 in Hopewell, York County, PA Susanna FAUST b: 15 JUL 1800 in York County, PA Israel FAUST b: 1804 in Pennsylvania Litia FAUST b: 28 MAY 1804 in Hopewell, York County, PA

According to "A History of York County" Balthasar owned a grist mill and a saw mill and 159 acres in Shrewsbury Twp.
