Note:   CHARLES W. FREDRICY/LYDIA JANE WINNER Parents of: LAURA SARAH FREDRICY
CHARLES W. FREDERICY was born August 2, 1833, probably in Lycoming County, PA.. His occupation has been listed in various documents as laborer or farm laborer. The 1870 US Census lists his father's birthplace as Germany and his mother's as Pennsylvania. No other information regarding his parents could be established.
Official documents of births, deaths, marriages as well as newspaper articles, and even personal family papers, have variously spelled the family name Fredricy as Fredericy, Fredricey, Frederici, . and Frederissy. However, there is no doubt that the data located correctly pertained to the family members contained herein. Charles kept the “Fredericy” spelling as is evidenced by bible records and his tombstone. For some reason, Grandmother Laura used the “Fredricy” spelling.
Apparently the Fredericy and Winner families were fairly large and established, or centered originally, in and around the Williamsport, Montoursville, region of PA. As in other parts of the State, county lines were changed and new ones organized. Where a county name is given, it is what was listed on a specific document, i.e. birth/death record, family bible, etc.
On November 23, 1854, CHARLES W. FREDRICY and LYDIA JANE WINNER were married in Williamsport, PA (the family bible indicates ceremony performed by Reverend Joseph Welker, Pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Williamsport).Considering their children's birth places, it appears the first few years of CHARLES & LYDIA's marriage were spent in the Williamsport area. The 1860 census shows Charles & Lydia and three children living in Loyalstock Township where he is identified as a “farm laborer”. Shortly after this the family moved to Salona in Lamar Township, Clinton County, Pa where they are found in 1862 listed as "probationers" at the Salona Methodist Episcopal Church. The next record found for him was a Civil War draft registration dated August 1863. (On this document his name is clearly spelled Fredericy) There is no record that he actually served in the Union army. The draft registration and US Census records for 1870 and 1880 show the family continued to live in Lamar Township, Clinton County Pa.
The economic times of the late 1860's and early 1870's were of extreme hardship. As a panacea for conditions following the panic of 1873, the US Government initiated a program of free lands out West to those citizens who wanted to relocate and settle in the area. The territory of Kansas was "thrown open to homesteaders in 1877." The family apparently decided to take advantage of this and by 1885 they are listed in a Kansas census as living in Holton, KA. The 1900 US Census shows him living with daughter Rose Lugton and family in Walnut Township, Cowley, KS. (Lydia had returned to PA by then.) Charles died December 10, 1911 and is buried in Graham Cemetery, Winfield, KS.
LYDIA JANE WINNER, born October 12, 1835 in Montoursville, Lycoming County, PA, the daughter of Jesse and Aseneth Winner. She was from a Christian family of the Methodist faith. Photographs depict Lydia as a slight-built petite lady; however, to the contrary, the photographs collected for this family history reflect the children of Charles/Lydia to be of 'round face' and stout/plump. By all accounts, they were upstanding citizens, good natured and pleasant. Research reflects Lydia was one of 12 children. One reference indicates (by the time of the 1880 US Census) that their son WILLIAM (22 years old and married) left PA for the Holton, KS area. At some point, his sister, ROSA LOREAN also went to KS and evidently the whole FREDRICY family went at some time but all did not stay; some went on to CA, returned to PA, etc.
Lydia Jane had 'suffered from pulmonary problems for many years' and sometime about 1890 she returned east with the hope that the difference in climate might help her health. Lydia resided with her daughter Clara Poorman and family in Johnstown and at age 57 she passed away there on April 17, 1892. She was buried in Brown's Cemetery in Bald Eagle Valley, Clinton County (the cemetery is on a small hill on the east side of Rt. 150, just north of Beech Creek and closer to Mill Hall; it is small and has been closed to additional burials for the past many years). Her husband Charles did not attend the funeral due to time, distance and his own failing health (though he was but 59 and lived 19 years and 5 months past Lydia's death). Her newspaper obituary states her funeral was attended by "her aged mother (Mrs. Winner), four brothers, three sisters of Lycoming County; three daughters and one son. Services conducted by Rev. N. B. Smith.
CHARLES & LYDIA had nine children:
WILLIAM B. FREDRICY, known as "Will" was born August 22, 1855, in Williamsport, Lycoming County, PA; died November 27, 1942, age 87, in Holton, KS. When he was 22 years old, he went to KS. He married ADELINA HICKSON (Addie or Ada) in 1879; she died in 1910 in KS. In 1911 "Will" returned to PA and married his childhood sweetheart (who was then CLARA BURD, having been married, widowed and residing in Aaronsburg); after which they went to his home in KS. Will was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday School for many years, served on the City Council and held other offices. Clara's death date is unknown, but she died after Will did.
CLARA JOSEPHINE FREDRICY, born February 6, 1857, in Williamsport,
Lycoming County, PA, and died November 21, 1908, in Johnstown, PA. The following notice was in the "The Clinton Democrat" Lock Haven, PA, Thursday morning edition, April 24, 1879: "Married.• in Salona, on the 16th, by Rev. L. G. Heck, Mr. JOHN POOR MAN of near Loch Haven, and Miss Clara .I. Fredericy of Salona. " John and Clara established their home in Johnstown PA and raised their family there.
ROSA LOREAN FREDRICY, born January 24, 1860, in Williamsport, Lycoming County, PA. Information gathered about her indicates she was called "Rena or Rosie," and had gone with the family to KS; married DAVID T. LUGTON on February 13, 1888 (born October 8, 1854; died April 2, 1931. Rena died in Johnstown while on a visit. Both were buried in Graham Cemetery, Winfield, KS.
MARY AMELIA ANN FREDRICY, known as "Aunt Mame" to friends and family.
Born November 24, 1862, in Salona, Clinton County, PA. She died on March 21, 1956 in Beech Creek, and buried in the Blanchard Church of Christ cemetary in Blanchard, PA. She married Beech Creek native Henry C. Williams who had a local mercantile business and after retirement was the manager of the Beech Creek Baseball Team. He died in 1918. Mary taught adult Sunday school at the Beech Creek Methodist Church for 40 years and the "Continuing Women's Class" was named in her honor for her long services and membership (her picture hangs in the church). Mary enjoyed good health except for poor eyesight and was blind in her senior years. She and Henry did not have children of their own.
JOHN DAVID W. FREDERICY born September 21, 1863 in Clinton County, PA and died there on December 23, 1864.
CATHARINE ASENETH FREDERICY born June 7, 1866 in Clinton County, PA and died there on October 26, 1868.
JAMES HARRISON FREDRICY, known as "Harry," born March 1, 1869 in Clinton County, PA. He was a short, portly gentleman and died June 10, 1938, age 69, in Hood River, Oregon, from a stroke suffered a week earlier. At Christmas Harry sent "red delicious apples" from OR to relatives in KS. His niece, Pearl Ray, recalled 'they had not known previously of that variety of apples and were a good treat.' To assist in finding out if Harry had married and had a family, several attempts were made to locate an obituary, but none was found. What was located, was a beautiful eulogy in the "Hood River News" issue dated June 17, 1938. It outlined Harry's life as a railroad worker, years of being "Santa Claus" for children at the Elks Lodge, and primarily his reknown as a sportsman highly involved locally and in cooperation with the Oregon State'Game Commission for the betterment of fishing and hunting in the Hood River and Cascades areas. The March 1885 US Census shows Harry, age 15, living in Holton, Jackson County, KS.
CHARLES EDWARD FREDRICY ("Ed") born February 10, 1871, Lamar, Clinton Co., PA. Married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bloom (born in Germany; came to the USA in 1874); died March 1, 1965 in Los Angeles CA. They resided in Roxbury (Johnstown) PA for many years. Ed was remembered to have been one of the first to fly in a hot-air balloon in Johnstown. 1910 US Census shows them living in Afton, Ottawa County, OK. About 1919 the family moved to Los Angeles (Belvedere Gardens) CA, where he died April 26, 1944. Ed had been a painter - decorator by trade. 1910 US Census shows family living in Afton, Ottawa County, OK.
LAURA SARAH FREDRICY, born December 16, 1876 in Salona, PA; died October 6, 1965 in Kittanning, PA while visiting her daughter and family; buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Johnstown, PA. Laura would have been just a toddler when the family headed west.
