Note: THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS TAKEN FROM THE ON-LINE TEMPLE GENEOLGY and other sources. THOMAS FRANKLIN TEMPLE was born February 19, 1826 in Coatesville, Chester County, PA. (Some records give his year of birth at 1823, including my mother’s, as do most of the census lists), but the 1826 year is probably right if his parent's marriage date of 1824 is correct. He was the son of John Temple and Hannah Hollis. His early life was spent in Sadsbury Township. His early schooling was there and an 1842 Pennsylvania Census has him living there. In August 1850 the Federal Census listed him as a furnace heater in East Caln, Chester, PA., living with his parents. However in September 1850 the Federal Census listed him as a furnace man living in Sadsbury Twp, Chester, PA with his wife and children. This latter listing must be correct as he married Hannah about 1845, based on the birth of their first child – Mary Melissa. It is not know how he came to be counted twice in the 1850 census. Sometime in the mid-50's the family moved to NJ. In the July 1860 census Thomas was a Heater in a Steel Rolling Mill living “east of Coles Street" in the 4th Ward of Jersey City, Hudson, NJ. At some point after this he and the family moved to Oxford Township, Warren County, NJ where he was working as an Iron heater, probably at the Oxford Furnace, according to the 1870 census. His son-in-law, Archibald Ray and family were living near by. At some point, the Temple's and Rays move back to Jersey City were Thomas is listed in a city directory as a watchman. They then move to Western PA, where the June 1880 census shows him working as a watchman in Conemaugh, Cambria, PA. He died on 21 December 1880 at the age of 54 in Cambria Co., PA. My mother’s records has him buried in Sandyvale and later moved to Grandview Cemetery, Highland 4, Section 195 although no marker could be found.
