Note:   CHARLES NEWTON WALLACE was born on January 3, 1868 in Shade Township (near Buckstown) Somerset County, PA. He was the son of John Wallace and Barbara Graef. Charles grew up with two older brothers and a younger sister. Another brother, born two years after him died as an infant.
Charles’ father died in 1872 when Charles was just 4. He worked as a farmhand until 1887 when he moved to Johnstown. There he worked for and boarded with Lewis Berkebile, learning the meat cutting trade, a job he worked at all of his life. On October 20, 1897, he married Elizabeth May Foust, the service performed by Rev. H. C. Salem at the Benscreek Lutheran Church. Lewis Berkibile was married to Elizabeth’s sister, Matilda. His major places of employment were the Penn Traffic slaughter house and the Johnstown Packing Company, working as a butcher and foremen. For most of his married life Charles owned a home at 1152 Hunt Street in the Roxbury section of J’town. His wife, Elizabeth died in 1916 and he remarried to a Hulda Clarke in 1925. Charles committed suicide by hanging in the cellar of his home on January 6, 1947. His obituary reported that he had been in ill health for several years prior to his death. (Family legend suggests that he just got tired of Hulda’s nagging.) He is buried in Grandview Cemetery.
