a. Note:   rm in North Beaver Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. He is theson of James Clifford Wallace and Annabelle McClelland. He was raisedthere amidst a batch of girls, being the only boy. After graduating fromMt. Jackson High School, John spent one winter at Penn State takingAgriculture extension courses. He returned to the farm, married, raiseda family, and still lives in the very house where he was born. John tells his children some of the anecdotes of his life. One timehe was to participate in the school recitation day. John and his UncleWilliam, being the same age, concocted a recitation together. When itwas their turn, they carried a barrel and a plank on to the stage andproceeded to seesaw. He never mentions the consequences of this action. During the 1930's there was a rat plague in Lawrence County. In theevenings the men would take turns going to different farms to kill rats.One day while at home John chased a rat into the new brooder house. Hefinally cornered the rat in the corner and blasted it with a 12 gaugeshot gun. In the process he blasted a hole in the side of the brooderhouse. That evening his father walked up to him and said, "Shooting ratssure can be hard on brooder houses." The next day John was presentedwith a small caliber gun. John worked as a farmer all his life. In his retirement years, hedrove the tractor, took care of the garden, and helped his sons wheneverpossible. Two lonely years after the death of his wife, John wasdiagnosed with prostate cancer. He choose to stay at home, even when hewas no longer able to walk. His son Ed lived with him and cared for himduring his six month illness. John was visited often during his illness. One of his visitors wasRenwick Wright, a Scotish immigrant. Renwick and John had met years ago,but Renwick had moved away to pastor far flung churches. Renwick decidedto retire to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and renewed his friendship withJohn, through John's son, Jonathan. During his visits, Renwick wascareful to explain the gospel message to John. John came to understandGod's grace in his life and became a Christian just weeks before hisdeath. The family of God and the family of John rejoiced greatly in thisexperience.
