a. Note:   HOTEL OPERATOR "One of the first hotels in Barnet was owned by Wm. Gleason, and known as the Green Mountain House. This hotel stood on Mill Hill where the Dunbar Apartments now stand. There was a long ell in which was a ball room was a ball room on the second floor (with closed shutters in photo). This was dedicated in a famous ball Jan 09 1849 which was a grand event in its day. Mrs Gleason made it a rule to always grace the dining room with her person at meal time and sat at the head of the table. This hotel was burnt Jan 24 1863, all but the ell and the big barns erected also by Wm. Gleason... The Nilsson House was built on the same spot and run by Robt Harvey ... George Walker was the owner when this building burnt in the fall of 1913. Walker's Inn was built the next year," later renamed Hotel Barnet, and still later converted into tenements that are today known as the Dunbar Apartments. [BTHpp208-209]. WOOLEN MILL OPERATOR 1825: "the General Assembly of 1825 granted a charter to Henry and Willard Stevens and SAMUEL GLEASON [??? one Sam'l was dead and the other age 12!] ... to build and operate mills at Stevens Village [now called Barnet Village] for the manufacture of cotton and woolen goods. The title of the enterprise was 'The Barnet Cotton and Woolen Manufacturing Company', and the capital stock was $40,000. [BTHp204]. His brother, William had replaced him by the time a second charter was issued in 1838 [BTHp205]. 1838: "There is no record of the date of building the second mill ... in 1838 a new charter was granted under the old title, which was changed, later, to the 'Caledonia Cotton and Woolen Mills', Henry Stevens, WILLIAM GLEASON, and John Herrin, with their associates were the incorporators, and the capital stock was fixed at $300,000. Herrin robbed the company of $24,000 he was to take to Boston, the Danville Bank attached the assets. 1862: "The Barnet Manufacturing Co was composed of Robert Laird, Moses A Bovee, Wm McLaren, SAMUEL GLEASON, Wm Scanlin, Claudius B Somers, and Asa B Thompson. They became seriously embarrassed and on Dec 20 1862, the County Court appointed Jonathan D Abbott as receiver 'of the woolen factory in Stevens Village, commonly known as the Goodrich factory, recently conducted by WILLIAM GLEASON, JUN'" [bthP206]. The mill burnt Dec 15 1869 [BTHp205].
