Notes
a. Note:   Hulda was baptized at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lemont, IL on February 12, 1893. Godparents were: Emil Kusch, Ernestine Schultz, Auguste Kusch. Hence, her logically derived given Germanic name of Hulda Augusta Emilie. On January 7, 1997, the pastor of Hulda and Charlie's church, DuPage Presbyterian Church, told G. Erickson the following story. "Hulda's eggs were always the best his family could get. They also got eggs from another church family, but Hulda's eggs always tasted the best." As Gene Erickson related to the pastor that Charlie was the major personality of his grandparents when he was alive and that Hulda then emerged to him as a really bright personality, the pastor related that Hulda also always had a very strong personality. Two very special people. After Hulda moved to Plainfield, her eyesight began to deteriorate, and within 3 years she could no longer drive safely. It deteriorated to the point that she was unable to see the temperature markings on the oven thermostat dial to set the temperature to bake her family-renowned sugar cookies for grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. That was quickly remedied by placing a piece of electrical tape at the desired temperature, and Grandma continued to make her fabulous cookies for many more years. Her eyesight was taken by the onset of old age diabetes that responded to oral medication. She fell one day when going to the basement and broke her hip that did not heal well and a wheelchair was the only solution to mobility. That change and deteriorating health meant a shift to two nursing homes, the final one being in Plainfield. She died at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 2 days due to an acute myocardial infarction. She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Hillcrest Cemetery. --Written by Gene Erickson, her grandson
