Note: N1 There is a July 11, 1915 news account from an Oregon newspaper [probably Portland] of Col. Daniel Howe Simmons, then age 87, who is reported to have said that his father was John Simmons, born Clarkstown, New York in 1761, who enlisted in the Colonial Army in 1776 and because he was so young was made an aide to General Washington. See Sources for a transcription. The article says that Daniel came to the Pacific Coast in 1852 to the goldfields of California and that for years he followed mining. There was no mention in the article of any wife or children. I.G.I. has the following information on Daniel Howe Simmons: birth 1 March 1829 in Armstrong County, Penn.; death 9 January 1922; and wife Keziah Klingensmith. In the index to the 1850 census for Ward 4, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio are Margt Simmons, 52, born Pennsylvania; Benj. Simmons, 23, born Pennsylvania; Daniel Simmons, 21, born Pennsylvania; and Augustus Simmons, 17, born Ohio. In the 1880 census for Upper Yellowstone Valley, Gallatin, Montana: D.H. Simmons, 51, born Pennsylvania, miner, parents born England and Pennsylvania; wife Katie, 56, born Pennsylvania; and six others, not related [T9-0742, p. 198A] Can't locate in 1860, 1870 or 1900. In the 1910 census for San Diego California, on Essex Ave.: Daniel H. Simmons, 81, born Pennsylvania, widower, miner at copper mine, parents born New York and Pennsylvania. In the 1920 census for Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, Daniel Simmons is a lodger in the Odd Fellows Home. He was 91, widower, born Pennsylvania, parents born New York and Pennsylvania.
