Notes
a. Note:   Barbara Cobourn, wife
In 1957 I started writing to Barbara, I was stationed in Maine and Barbara was living in London. I subscribe to an article that place your name on a mailing list for English ladies to correspond with.
After a year of writing back and forth I had a big decision to make. I had just passed my examination to obtain my degree in American Law & Procedure and my discharge date was approaching. Before I met Barbara I had planned on leaving the military and pursue a legal career if I passed the final examination and received my LLB degree.
I made up my mind I would stay in the military since I had over twelve years towards retirement and I put in for an overseas assignment to Europe. In 1959 I traveled to England and met Barbara and her son Pete, Barbara was beautiful, I don't believe I had ever met someone like her. She was just 5 foot one and weighed 96 pounds. We were married in her home town and it was beautiful meeting everyone in her family and friends. The people in England are just lovely people to be around, strangely most of them like Americans. In 1960 are first child was born, day before my birthday, I named her Fiona Jayne, very special and received with a lot of love.
We returned to United States in September 1961, spent a week at home and then reported to Bergstrom Air Force Base, Austin, Texas. I immediately was assigned quarters on base and we settled in. In 1963 Stephen William was born at the base hospital, really looked forward to having a family of three. A few months later Barbara beat out a lot of contestants for the position of FM radio announcer with KTBC Radio in Austin, owned by President Johnson's wife, Lady Bird Johnson. Her on the job trainer was later well known sportscaster Verne Lundquist. In about three months she received her first small check for a commercial she made, very exciting time for her. In 1965 I was sent to Vietnam for a year and returned back to Bergstrom in 1966. Every year Lady Bird Johnson and her daughters would host a xmas ball for all the employees and families in the ball room within the radio station building, it was very exciting to be around some pretty important people. Barbara and Catus Pryor, station manager were host for two special events, Junior Miss and a fashion pageant held in Austin, this was big time. Catus Pryor was a close friend of John Wayne, made several movies with him, latest was the one on Vietnam. The CEO of the station was the brother of President Johnson's wife who was a witness on my will that I made out prior to going to Vietnam. In 1967 Barbara completed all her requirements to become an America citizen, she received her certificate in Philadelphia while waiting orders to join me in Germany in 1967.A lady wrote a cook book while we were in Austin and dedicated it to Barbara, I believe the children have this book.
After I retired from the service in 1972 we settled down in Orlando, Florida. We both ran a Campground on the outskirts of Orlando. In 1974 I left the Campground because of its pending sale and took the test for the Post Office, I starting work in January 1975. In 1978 Barbara took the test for the post office and just score one of the highest grades in the area. She started work in Opa Locko, Florida. After our divorce in 1974 Barbara continue with the post office until her untimely death while at work.
Barbara and I had a on and off relationship, I don't believe we ever found the path to a stable relationship. She was a highly intelligent and loving person but she had to control the right to her emotions and no one was permitted to control her heart.....
Barbara was cremated and her ashes returned to England where her sister Joyce spread her ashes over their favorite playground and nearby lake...
