Note: In 1977 he did have a pain in his back which was caused by an abdominal aortic aneurysm that was repaired at Oak Knoll Hospital in Oakland,California. Dad had severe back pain and the doctors did take x-rays and they thought he just did hurt himself while he was working on the roof and they sent him home. He was in a lot of pain and he tried to get relief in my sleeping in a bathtub and sleeping on the floor but he still was in pain and then later on a radiologist took a look at his x-ray and determined that he was having an aneurysm and Elsie put him into the car and got dad down to the Oak Knol Naval hospital and they work on them immediately for the aneurysm. Walt and Sandy were in Canada and they drove to North Carolina and Harry and Millie Falter took care of the kids and Walt and Sandy flew to California to be with dad and it was aproblem getting to Raleight,NC as they had 3' of snow and got last flight out. In 2000 while visiting his doctor he complained of a chest pain while he did his weekly exercises which later lead to categorization which indicated he had 3-vessel coronary disease and a 7cm aortic aneurysm in the descending aorta. In March of 2000 a Stent was inserted and then in July he had open heart surgery to repair the damaged arteries that was done at Sanford hospital in Palo Alto,California. His radiotherapist surgeon was R.Scott Mitchell on the faculty of Sanford University. While visiting his sister Audrey in the summer of 2005 he felt weak and had some diarrhea but did not go to a hospital and continued his trip to Denver to visit with Elsies sister Gladys in Greeley. Walt,Jr. was called to come to Greeley to help Elsie handing him because he was so weak. Walt had him admitted to hospital in Greeley,Colardo and the doctors found out he had an infection in bile duct with some stones. He stayed in hospital for about a week to regain his strength. Would not eat or drink for the most part. Got him back to NC where he saw his family doctor and then a short time later went to Duke Hospital and they removed some stones and he did recover. Elsie,Debbie,Mia,Walt,Jr and Sandy took a cruise to Jamaica in the year 2003 and dad got sick on the ship which was a Carnival ship and we were near Jamaica so what the doctor ordered was for dad to get off the ship because the doctor thought that he may be having an aneurysm as his blood pressure was very low. So after getting off the ship and Jamaica we put dad into a so-called Jamaican ambulance and they proceeded to take him to a Jamaican Hospital call More Hope. After the doctors looked at him in the hospital called More Hope in Montingo Bay,Jamaica they determined that there was really nothing wrong with dad so we had to get back to the ship as soon as possible and we just made it as the ship was pulling away from the port in Jamaica when dad got back to North Carolina it was determined that he had picked up the West Nile virus in Rocky Mount and that's what caused his blood pressure to be very low. It was determined because the doctor examining dad saw a small growth on his hand and the doctor and in doing so cut herself at this point the blood was sent to Atlanta for analysis and it was determined at this point that dad had picked up West Nile virus. Complained of pain on right side below the lung and admitted to Nash General Hospital in November 2009. A small catheter was put into gall blatter to drain. Went in to Nash Hospital in November 9,2009 and was released to Guardian Care Nursing home Nov.20,2009. Dad stayed in the rest home until February 17,2010 when he had a camera put down his nose to determine why he was having a hard time eating and a lot of coughing while eating--it was determined he should not eat solid type of food and no more water and tea but only drink water, tea and milk the consistence of honey as his food was going into his lungs. After finishing his evening meal the nurse checked his oxygen (56%) and noticed his stomach doing all the breathing and we got him to Nash General Hospital and was put on a venerator and it is determined he can not recover as he will not be able to eat or drink without going to his lungs and causing pneumonia. Was taken off the venerator on Monday February 22,2010 and given a Swallow Test but results not good. Did do another Swallow Test on Wednesday 2-24-2010 (to see if food goes to lungs). As of March 1,2010 dad still at Nash General and is un-responsive to people for the most part-sometimes will say "hello" and is still getting breathing treatments every 4-hours. March5,2010 dad moved to Life Care Hospital per Dr. Varmer maybe 3-weeks? As of March 16,2010 dad still in Life Care and received some blood and for most part un-responsive to anyone-will open eyes sometimes. Dad was moved from Live Care hospital today(March26,2010) to Guardian Care and seem alert and did answer some questions, however,he died in he evening of March 26,2010 at Guardian Care and by all indications his heart just stopped beating. Dad's funeral was April 1, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran church on Winstead Avenue in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and his obituary was printed in the Rocky Mount Telegram newspaper dated Tuesday, March 30, 2010 and reads as follows "Walter Raleigh Terry,Sr. of Rocky Mount,N.C. formally of San Leadro, California, died Friday, March 26, 2010. Some reflections that we've had of dad when we talk amongst ourselves being the family members is that dad was a wonderful person who went beyond the normal call of duty of a father and a grandfather and great-grandfather to a family he was very devoted to all members of the family and he went out of his way to financially help anyone who needed a little help. I remember one time one of his friends in California was opening an ice cream store near Hayward California and needed I believe $5000 for the ice cream store and he was going to employ I believe 99 kids and I believe the store was a failure and possibly dad never received any money back but that was just his nature he helped people in time of need and got little in return. Dad always said his father Ulyssis was that way in helping family member and was taken advanage of by some. Dad helped his son Walt Junior by buying a house in Rocky Mount on Amherst Road and then Walt Junior gave the house to his son Scott to help him so it's this process that of helping family members and they in turn helped other family members it is a great remembrance of dad as a human being. When we would go out to eat dad would always try to pick up the bill but usually we would insist that it be shared but that was his nature he wanted to take care of everything. Dad and Elsie also got Sandy and Walt involved in cruising and one trip that was very memorable that dad paid for was a cruise from Sydney Australia to Auland, New Zealand where we all had a wonderful time--we all flew from LAX to Sidney and they got on the cruise boat. According to his Service Record: Joined Coast Guard in 1934 in San Francisco,1935 Academy in New London,Conn ,1936 Hospital Corps Sand Diego for 9-month;1937 Headquarter in Washington D.C. ;1941 U.S. Marine Hospital in Baltimore,Md (Public Health Service); Ship Tahoe for 7-months;Ship Bayfield with Admiral Moon who killed himself and dad help take him off the ship for 13-months;ship Capps 1944 which was her maiden voyage around the world and dad crossed the equator and was entered into the King Neptune ritual as he was the Royal Surgeon. Dad was a Pharmacist aboard. 1945 ship General Adolphus Washington Greeley and the Commander was G.W. Stedman,Jr who dad said was very wealthy. One story told over and over was when he was in grade school in Live Oak his teacher Mary Stolness would sent dad our to buy opium during the school time. At that time opium was not illegal but it was later found out his teacher was a dope addict. and was fired by dads father Uylssis Terry later on. Who I believe was on school board for Live Oak,Calif.? According to his Death Ceertificate be died of pneumonia.
