BIRTH: Born 6 Mar. 1892 in Hot Springs, Fall River, South Dakota
BIOGRAPHY: Born in Hot Springs S.D. Lived there and in Edgemount S.D. intill 1899 when his family moved to Billings Montana.Lived in Billings until he finished school. Attended University of Michigan from 1912 to 1915 and graduated with a degree in civil engineering. Worked as a engineer for the Mexican Federal Railroad 1916-1918. Joined the US Army 1918-1819 as a Second Lieutenant stationed in New Jersey. Worked for the Montana Highway Dept. from 1919 to about 1925- 26. During this time he married Lucile Redmond of Redmond Oregon. Went to Redmond Oregon in late 1926 or early 1927 to run the Redmond Family farrm. My older sister and only Phyllis sibling was born there 2 Oct. 1929. Because of economic conditions ( The Great Depression) the farm was taken over by the bank. Dad, Mom and Grandfather Redmond continued to live there for a time living off the milk cows, the chickens and the garden. They had no money. Dad hitched a ride on a California bound truck to find work.. He told me there was no work in rural Oregon and darned little any where else. This must have been about 1930 -31. Dad spoke of them living in Sacremento in the early 1930 period. I do not know if grandfather Redmond ( age aprox 70) was with them or not. The next stop and the last was Phoenix where he got a job with the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads. I was born 9 July 1934. In 1939 I caught Polio and that caused several changes. I was in the hospital some time and while I was there Dad had built a new house that was as handicap equiped as possible at that time. They had been living in an upstairs apartment at 545 E. Willetta St. but with me unable to walk upstairs apartments were not practical. The new house was at 307 E. Alavardo Rd. between Mc Dowell and Thomas roads just off third street. I don't know exactly when we moved in but I remember we lived there on December 7, 1941. It was" way out on the edge of town". The garage of the house had a small apartment for grandfather Redmond but he never used it as he was living in a rest home by then. Dad and mom lived in that house until about 1957 when they moved to the outskirts of town again. The address of this house was 4315 E St. Joseph Way. Looking north from the old house was Camelback Mountain. Looking South from the new house was the same mountain so it was about 6 or 7 miles north of of the old one. Dad lived there until my mother died in 1961. Some time after that Dad moved to Scottsdale where he remarried and lived until his death. His 2nd wife was Jane Elisabeth Wohlrab.
