Notes
a. Note:   Patrick was born in Ireland possibly in County Cork. My Aunt Hannah Sullivan Sullivan remembers her mother Agnes Gerrity Sulliivan always kidded her father about being a Corkcorian. Many folks from County Cork immigrated to Wales to work in the Iron Works. Have not been able to find my SULLIVAN family. Have only been able to find Patrick and his brother Florence. My ggrandfather Patrick moved to Wales where he met and married Ellen Cummings who was born in Wales. Ellen's parents were both from Ireland. 1863 Marriage certificate General Register Office R005752 indicates Patrick Sullivan was 21; a bachelor; a fireman in the iron works married Ellen Cummins; 19; a spinster. They were living in Rhymney. Patrick's father was John Sullivan (deceased); a general laborer. Ellen Cummins was living in Rhymney; her father was John Cummins; a general laborer. They were married 25 July 1863. Marriage was solemnized at the Register Office Bedwellt, Monmouth Wales. Witness was David Evans and Mary By***. Neither Patrick or Ellen were able to write their name and they both signed their X mark. It appears the Cummings family were parishoners of the Immaculate Conception Church in Tredegar Wales while the Sullivan family frequented St. John's parish in Rhymney. I understand the churches are 3-4 miles apart. According to Patrick Sullivan Naturalization papers he arrived Port of New York 10 September 1865. He was naturalized 29 September 1884 with John Shea as witness. The register of the SS City of Manchester from Liverpool 7 September 1865 microcopy #237 1820-1897 Roll #256 7-30 Sep 1865 lists 857-942 shows: passenger # 383 Catherine Sullivan 25 years old spinster Ireland; #390 Margaret (May) Sullivan 25 spinster Ireland ; #399 John Sullivan 27 laborer Ireland; #447 Ellen Sullivan 27 spinster Ireland;-- # 447 Mary Sullivan 30 Wife; #448 John Sullivan 9: #449 (9-28) Tim Sullivan 5: #450 James (Joseph) Sullivan 3 #451 Daniel Sullivan 1;-- #466 Daniel Sullivan 24 Laborer #588 Patrick Sullivan 20 (?) laborer #592 B. Sullivan 20 spinster. Passenger list for the Ship Manhattan from LIverpool and Queenstown indicates 12 April 1867 arrived in New York Passenger 340 Pat Sullivan 25 and 341 Ellen Sullivan 20. 1870 Luzerne County Old Forge census indicates Patrick was 27 and born in Ireland: wife Ellen 22 and daughter Ellen 5 both born in Wales; daughter Margaret 2 born in PA. 1880 Census Old Forge S415 Vol 41 Ed 43 sheet 18 line 17 indicates Patrick was 38 a miner, lived in Old Forge and was born in Ireland; Ellen wife was 35 born in Wales; daughter Ellen was 14 born in Wales; daughter Margaret 12 born in PA; Son John 9 born in PA; daughter Hannora 5 born in PA and son Andrew 2 born in PA. Living next door to Patrick's family was the family of Ellen Cummings parents and siblings. John Comens. On 4 October 1881 Patrick Sullivan purchased from the DL&W for the sum of $386 a lot on the piece of land in Township of Lackawanna (late of Luzerne County) lot Nr 225 situated on High Street 50x150 ft. On 15 October 1886 Patrick Sullivan purchased lot Nr 224 on High Street for $386. Patrick and Ellen had 15 children and according to the 1900 census 11 were living: 8 were living at home. Home was 108 and 110 E. High Street, Taylor, PA.The 1900 census indicates Patrick/Ellen were married 37 years by 1900. Census reported his age as 52 being born in 1848 in Ireland. Norah 23, Andrew 22, Loretta 19, Joseph 18, Kate 14, Cecilia 12, Bessie 10 and Edward 6. St. Joseph Cemetery records Patrick's grave was purchased by Mrs. Bridget Davis (sic Cecilia) 108 E. High St. Taylor in May 1902; Records further indicate Mrs. Bridget Davis died May 16, 1963 and Edward Davis died August 26, 1963. Patrick was buried May 14, 1903 Blk 8 Lot 24 West section of St. Joseph's Cemetery in Minooka, PA. Not sure of Patrick's age but according to his tombstone in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Minooka, PA he was 61 when he died in 1903 which would make his birth date 1842. 1900 census indicates he was born March 1848 From the Scranton Republican May 11,1903: Saturday evening at his home on High St. about 10 o'clock, Mr Patrick Sullivan, one of the pioneer residents of the borough, passed away after a long suffering with miners asthma. Deceased had been a resident of the town for many years and was respected. He was 58 years of age and is survived by his widow and several grown up children. A solemn mass of requiem will be sung at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. From the Scranton Republican May 14 1903: The remains of Mr Patrick Sullivan of High St. were laid to rest Tuesday morning. A solemn high requiem mass was sung at the Church of the Immaculate Conception after which the remains were conveyed to the Minooka Catholic cemetery. A story attributed to Patrick , as told to me by John Lynch Jr. was that Patrick would report for work in the mines. He was told that there was no work for him while the man behind him did in fact get to work that day. After a few days of this Patrick noticed a pattern. It seems the man behind him was asked for his name replied David David; the next day the man behind him who got to work was Thomas Thomas. The next day when Patrick was asked his name he replied Patrick Patrick.....he got to work in the mine.
