Notes
a. Note:   Revolutionary War Veteran: said to have entered service in 1777 with 2nd VA State Reg. Pensioned at age 72 in Frederick County VA. Listed in 1840 Warren Co. VA census as Rev. War. veteran. Will probated 1844 in Warren County VA (Will Book A, p256-7, proved June 17 1844). May have moved from Westmoreland Co. Va to King George Co. VA, as one daughter was born there. Purchased land in Kentucky; it is uncertain if and when he actually lived there.
Wm. Monroe's will, made in 1836 and witnessed by John Latham, Presley Hansbrough and John Edwards, references land in Leeds Manor, Warren County. Son George Monroe received land William had acquired in Kentucky (Union County), as did daughter Eliza (possibly in Breckinridge or Union County KY). Union Co. KY Deed Books show in 1830 Wm. Monroe, grantee, Wm. and Jane Ash, grantors, for 250 acres in Union Co.
Wm. made a codicil to his will, July 1842, revoking the earlier part of the instrument willing a portion of the estate to his son John Monroe, and instead appointed James R. Richards as Trustee for John's wife Ethelinda Monroe and her children, to control this portion of the estate, with son John to have no access or control of it. Witnesses were Wilford G. Settle and John Latham.
William Monroe also acquired land in Hopkins Co. KY (adjacent to Union Co. KY) in the early 1840s; a commissioner's deed in Hopkins Co. dated July 4 1848 passes this land to one Joseph Swope. The 1840 Hopkins Co. KY census shows one William Monroe there (possibly the son?) 1m 10-15, 1 m 15-20, 1 m 50-60, 1 f 50-60. Male is too young to be old Wm. of Warren Co.
Frederick Co. VA marriages of Monroes with possible ties:
-Charles Butler m. Peggy (Margaret) Monroe Feb. 2, 1818; John Latham b.m. Margaret Butler left an 1852 will in Breckinridge Co. KY, mentioning money in the hands of her brother James Monroe, who was probably husband of Wm's daughter Eliza. This will also mentioned sister Mrs. Nancy Compton).
-John Monroe m. Malinda Wilkerson March 4, 1822 Frederick Co. VA, Geo. Monroe b.m. (could this be Ethelinda, w/o son John Monroe mentioned in William's will?)
-John Latham m. Elizabeth Monroe, Dec. 23, 1811, widow of John Monroe decd. of Frederick Co. VA
