a. Note:   From Warrior Mountains Folklore (by Rickey Butch Walker): About 1833, the Thomas Pate family moved into the cove (Borden Cove?). Per Cowart, Thomas 1st entered 40 acres in Section 5 of Township 8 South and Range 8 West on 10-5-1832. He also entered 3 other tracts between 1833-1856. Thomas and Christiana Borden Pate are 1st shown on the Lawrence Co., AL census in 1840. Per the 1850 census, they had 11 children: Stephen, 28; Mathew, 23; Jeremiah, 21; Lucinda, 19; Thomas, 17; Sarah, 15; Mary, 18; Mary, 13; William, 11; Nancy, 9; and David, 4. Thomas Pate and his wife were born in TN. His date of birth was 1794 and Christina was born in 1804. Originally from TN, Thomas and Christiana Borden Pate md. in Morgan Co., AL on 5-7-1822 and lived for a while near Sommerville, AL. Records indicate they entered land and settled in the cove in 1832. Per the 1850 census records, they had 11 children. 3 of the Pate children intermarried with other families in the cove. Nancy, Sarah Jane ("Mame"), and William F. (Bill) Pate. The Pate family were Cherokee Indian mixed-bloods, since Christiana Borden was 1/2 Cherokee Indian on her mother's side.
