Notes
a. Note:   After marriage moved from Kilmore to Deniliquin, Wentworth, Nyngan."Green Camp" -first selected in 1885 by Wards. Arrived Nyngan 1888. Michael died of pneumonia, it could not be cured easily then - no antibiotics. Labourer from Limerick, Ireland. Immigrated in 1857, aged 20, on the "Crimea" THE WARDS MICHAEL WARD (1836-9/12/1891) m. (4/4/1860) ANNE RYAN (1838-12/12/1902) from Limerick and Tipperary in Ireland. A majority of Irish immigrants came from that part of Ireland. If you go there, the locals can tell you where your family lived just from your surname. Married in 1860. Michael died 1891 Buried in Nyngan cemetery. Ryan's were involved with a reunion at Dookie, Victoria attended by 600; some Ryans came to Nyngan reunion. Ward re-union - from paper. Descendants of Michael and Anne Ward gathered at Nyngan last weekend for a family re-union. Michael sailed on the 'Crimea' from Ireland to Australia where he met and married Ann Ryan who had also immigrated from Ireland. They settled in Melbourne and were married in 1860. Their family of seven children were born at Kilmore, Nagambie, Victoria and Deniliquin, NSW. They later moved to Nyngan where they purchased land. Five of the children married and they had families. Over two hundred descendants attended the re-union with almost equal numbers unable to attend. The youngest descendant Joshua James John Ward, infant son of John and Nicole Ward (Dubbo), was baptised at St Patrick's Church by Father Kevin Murphy on Sunday and the oldest descendant present was Mrs Alice (Allie) Logan. Amongst those present was Catherine Mullens from Indiana USA who had travelled the longest distance and Betty Cunningham from New England. Others travelled from all parts of NSW, Queensland and Victoria. See photos on page 11. Auntie Sylvia 30/3/97 Florence Bentick (Flo) died from an abcess on the brain when 21 - never married. Olive (Ollie) was the one married to Paddy Prendergast. Margaret & Miriam at Katoomba about 35 years ago Harold's wife is still at Katoomba - Gwen Ward off the town bypass. (Mum & Dad used to leave the car there sometimes and catch the train to Sydney from there - from Tony) Bill - Son of Auntie Syl's Uncle Bill was killed off a tractor in Megalong Valley. Wife still lives at Blackheath. Also her son Bill and daughter (Kerrie Rapley) live at Blackheath Old Ward farm in Megalong Valley called "Euroka" is now a resort - fair way down the valley. They owned another farm in the valley too? Nora married George Payne who had the Menswear shop at Nyngan. George Payne's brother had the Chemists at Parkes - this chemist's son died only recently. The Ward brothers had "Delta" at Nyngan, "Redlands" at Miandetta and "Greencamp" before they split up; that was Jack, Tom and Paddy - the others had taken a share - Michael, William, Margaret. Jack stayed at Megalong & died there, so they must have owned land there then too (possibly two farms in the valley) Jack's eldest son John went onto "Delta" when they split up in about 1923, the same time that Paddy came to "Melrose Plains". This John's son John is on "Delta" now. Paddy was born at Kilmore and went to school there for a while until they moved to Nyngan - when Paddy was about 12? I can remember Uncle Tom on a verandah at Nyngan in January with an overcoat on!! I was only a kid and it seemed a very hot day!!! - Tony. Auntie Syl - 21st Nov 97 - Paddy was 9? when his parents took up "Greencamp" -1878? Wards were the first settlers on "Greencamp". Paddy Ward ran into bushrangers when a kid. He would joke that he had to get the horses for them as he was the only one with boots. They would only pinch the best blood horses. Paddy was 70 when he died 11th May 1939. Paddy Ward and Tom Carey had a match race after the Tullamore races - probably did it often! When? Uncle Frank (before he was married) was a bit wild. Auntie Syl can remember Frank and Tom Carey having a Bullfight with cars one wet night after a ball at Tullamore. Frank may have had a Humber - they were powerful cars. Paddy Ward owned Berrilee at Orange - Pinnacle when he owned Melrose Plains. "Euroka" resort in Megalong Valley was apparently owned and built by Wards, constructed from timber cut on "Greencamp", Nyngan. It would be a good place for the next reunion - there are still Wards in Blackheath, close to Sydney, plenty of history there, accomodation, sights to see, close to Sydney, cool in summer; resort could be booked out for the weekend if done well in advance. From Auntie Sylvia July 1999 : Ollie (Bentick) Prendergast living at Laurieton, North Coast - last heard of there. Paddy Ward was 22 when his father died 9th Dec 1891. Wards took up "Green Camp" 1888. Paddy 16 when they came to Nyngan. "Green Camp" Michael & Ann Ward came to Nyngan in 1885 and selected land : 20,000 acres which they had cleared by groups of Chinamen. There family consisted of : John, Mick, Paddy, Nora, Tom, William, & Margaret. They acquired more land in the Nyngan district : "Elders", which joined "Green Camp", "Beetree", "Delta" & "Redlands". Most of the family moved away, but Tom still had "Green Camp" at the time of his death 1960. Some of the Ward descendants are still in the Nyngan district. This information was given by Sylvia Thompson, daughter of Paddy Ward. THE WARD FAMILY. by Sylvia Thompson (Ward). The Wards came to Nyngan after selling their property at Kilmore, Vic.; taking up four blocks later known as Green Camp, building the house on the corner of each block 20,000 acres, Old System Title in 1885. There was 5 boys and 2 girls. After their mother died, some drifted away and their brothers John, Paddy & Tom carried on as "Ward Bros", John living at the Blue Mountains, whilst Paddy & Tom lived at Green Camp. Paddy was manager until the homestead was burned down about 1920, they think the fire started by wax matches in the heat - they lost everything. Paddy then went to live at "Beetree", about three miles from Nyngan on the Bogan River until the brothers divided. Paddy sold his share to McLachlans, "Whitewood" Nyngan, who joined; Thomas held his share until he died 1960. Paddy bought Melrose Plains, Tullamore in 1923, 72,000 acres. The family moved Feb 1924, walking their horses and sheep by road from Nyngan. There was Mick, Vera, Cath, Frank, Sylvia, Bert, Ethel, Leslie (dec), Fred. When first there, the mail came three times a week from Tullamore by sulky, the mailman stayed the night taking any mail back the next day, there was a small post office on the property which closed when a motor lorry took up the contract and returned the same day. Paddy was a great sportsman, owned many horses & at the time of his death in 1939 was mentioned in many papers; the enclosed photo & clipping mentioned many horses and the photo is of the match for 100 pounds in 1911 on Miss Benah (in one racing paper). Some of the descendants are still interested in racing. After Mrs Paddy Ward died in 1947, the three sons Frank, Bert and Fred divided the property. Mick, another son left before. Frank sold his share (the home part of it) to brother Fred and son Des and they still own it; after Bert passed away in 1975, one of his sons, Tony, carried on & is still there - called "Flemington". From Auntie Kate Stuckey : Michael Ward married Ann Ryan April 4th 1861 Melbourne. Michael was born in Limerick Ireland. Ann Ryan came from Tipperary Ireland. Paddy Ward lived at "Greencamp" 1908 till sold to McLaughlin in February 1923. Came and lived at "Melrose Plains" 1924. Fred, Des and Tony are still living on "Melrose Plains". In 1923 Paddy Ward , sons Mick, Frank, Bert and Fred came to live on "Melrose Plains", which was 72,000 acres, many lease blocks till 1931. And at present Fred, Des and Tony own now. Lots of sheep, cattle and wheat, being 32 miles from Condobolin and 20 miles from Tullamore. Our father passed away in Orange 1939 at the age 70 years, was buried in Orange.
