(James) 17049 Wood **************************************************** According to the Soldier's Application for Confederate Pension of Joseph James Minshew, which he filed on July 27, 1909, he was born in Barbour County, AL. Will be 71 the 17th day of April 1910. Has lived in Texas since December 22, 1872, living in Wood County. Occupation: Farming. Date of enlistment to discharge was "From August 1861 to June 1865 in Company B, 25th Alabama Infantry." The Certificate of the State and County Assessor on July 27, 1909 assessed a value of "$430.00" for Joseph's estate, real, personal and mixed. The War Department Record states: "It is shown by the records that J. J. Minshew, Corporal, Company B, 25th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army was enlisted September 7, 1861 and that he was captured and held as a prisoner of war until June 6, 1865 when discharged from Camp Douglas, Illinois." On June 19, 1865 Joseph J. Minshew of Pike County, Alabama signed an oath of allegiance to the United States. On it he is described as having "fair complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes, and is 5'8" high." The Application for Mortuary Warrant states Joseph died on January 29, 1928 in his home in Hawkins, Wood Co., Texas. His Wife I. T. Minshew filed this application. The Certificate of Undertaker was signed by R. B. Smith, but does not state where the burial was to take place. The Certificate of Physician is signed by A. B. Moody and states that Joseph's ailment was "Infection from wound on hand."
