Note: According to the American Board of Missions Record of Marriages and Certificate of Marriage, Entry #61, George and Henrietta were married before the Honorable Williams, Minister Resident of the US at the Sublime Port and other officers of the Legation by W. G. Schauffler. Washburn graduated Amherst College 1855, Andover Seminary 1858. Sailed from Boston 14 July 1858. Arrived Constantinople August 1858 as Mission Treasurer. Returned to US 1862-63. Ordained 1863. Returned to Constantinople September 1863. Returned to US and resigned from Mission Board 1868. Became Professor of Philosophy at Robert College in 1869. President 1878-1903. In US from 1903-1906. Taught at Robert College again until he retired to Boston in 1908. Was Treasurer of the Board for over ten years. During a short vacation to America he was ordained to the Congregational ministry. On return to Constantinople he was associated with Mr. Herrick in the Turkish Department, while also acting as treasurer. He returned to America and affiliated with a group of men in New York who desired to work on behalf of the moral and social elevation of women in heathen and Mohammedan lands. Before he could assume that work he was asked by Mr. Christopher Robert to go to Robert College for two years to help Mr. Hamlin erect the college building at Hissar. He remained associated with the college until 1908. He was awarded degrees from the following: Amherst 1874, DD; Michigan, Princeton and Amherst, LLD., 1900; Pennsylvania 1906, LLD. He died of pneumonia at the home of his son George in Boston. John Hopkins University in Maryland has a copy of the book "Robert College: the American Founders" by Keith M. Greenwood.
