Notes
a. Note:   1. In order to receive his pension in 1909, I.D. Shields offered as proof of his Confederate service, an affadavit signed by 2 close friends: Lewis R. Muldrow and George W. White. Lewis Muldrow is listed in the 1911 Hempstead County, Arkansas census of Confederate soldiers. George White is listed as having received in 1860, a land patent of 160 acres in the same Section 19 as Mr. Shields--they were close neighbors. George White is also listed as a private in the 4th Arkansas Infantry, Company E where I.D. Shields served as a 5th Sgt. Both Mr. Muldrow and Mr. White stated that they had known Mr. Shields for 50-years. 2. In Charlean Moss Williams, "The Old Town Speaks"; Anson Press, Houston. 1951, there is a 2-page article about Mr. Shields that reads: Isaac D. Shields--Another pioneer of the old town was Isaac Shields, born in Cumberland County, Kentucky, in 1834, and brought to Arkansas by his parents who settled in Hempstead County in 1836. Mr. Shields was a brother of Mrs. James Lowery (incorrect, she was his wife Emma's sister P.Shields 2002), wife of one of the oldest Methodist ministers in the Territory. Mr. Shields joined the Confederate forces at Washington in 1861, taking his place in the Confederate Guards as it was being organized. The company was at one time commanded by Captain Rose, and was attached to Colonel McNair's Brigade of Arkansas Infantry. From Washington, the company marched to Southern Missouri, and was on its way to this point when the Battle of Oak Hills was fought. After taking an active part in the Battle of Elk Horn, or Pea Ridge, in Benton County, Arkansas, which was fought on March 7, 1862, the company was attached to General Bragg's army and was engaged at the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, on October 3 and 4, 1862. From Corinth, Mr. Shields marched with his command to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they joined Gen. Kirby Smith, and were engaged in the fight at Richmond, Kentucky. From Kentucky back to Tennessee, and to the Battle of Murfreesboro; then on to Mississippi. Mr. Shields was outside, but in sight of Vicksburg, at the time of the surrender of that city. After the surrender of Vicksburg, he was marched back to Tennessee, joining Gen. Joseph E. Johnson's army. He was in the last raid to Tennessee and at the Battle of Franklin and Nashville. He was with General Johnson's army in front of Sherman in the memorable March to the Sea, and saw almost continual fighting during that time, taking part in the Battles of Resacca, Atlanta, and Jonesboro; he surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, April 18, 1865. After the War, Mr. Shields returned to Hempstead County and remained a citizen of the county up to the time of his death which occurred at his home in Washington, December 22, 1911. Mr. Shields was married to Miss Emma Williamson and reared a large family. His first wife died many years ago and for his second wife he married Miss Sally Johnson, also of Washington. He was a substantial citizen. Note: Most of this information is from I.D. Shields' 1911 obituary that was printed in the Washington Telegraph.
