 Marriage in Amelia County, Virginia - Virginia State Library, Charlotte County Marriage Bonds and Ministers Returns Page W-5-a (I have a copy of the marriage; courtesy of Jane DeBacker).
  "11 June 1794 Marriage bond for William Weatherford and Jane Chapman, daughter of John Chapman, Sr. whose consent says "...my daughter Jane..."; witnesses to the consent are Benjamin Chapman and William Chapman: (Jane's brothers) suretor, Joel Compton (Jane's brother-in-law); They were married 11 June by Rev. James Mcglasson who in his minister's returns says "Jean".
  William Weatherford migrated from Amelia County, Virginia to Spartanburg District, South Carolina ca 1806-1807.
  I have no primary proof of the relationship between William and James Weatherford. Census records show William and James Weatherford enumerated near each other in 1820 and 1830 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. A few assorted court records placing them in the same vicinity and the pattern of given names of descendants is all I have to offer at this time. Two of Jane's (Chapman) brothers, John and William Chapman, also migrated to Spartanburg from Amelia County, Virginia (prior to William and Jane).
  Personal tax records were found for William in Amelia County, Virginia beginning with 1791 through 1806, although he is not listed consecutively on all the records----- In 1791 he is living with John Chapman Sr., as well as John Chapman Jr., Ben Chapman and John Wright (who was this?). After 1791, William is listed living by himself (women were not taxed unless they were the head of the household).
 These tax records tell me that William was in Amelia County from 1791-1806, verifying that he did not migrate to Spartanburg until after the spring of 1806. He was not listed in 1807 (in Amelia County) and in 1808 no taxes were collected for the commonwealth of Virginia. The tax records do not tell how long he was in Amelia County before 1791----how old he was, where he was born or who his parents were. Although, he wasn't an orphan as that condition was noted on these tax records.
  Other Weatherfords living in Amelia County during the 1791-1800's include; Charles, Richard, John and William. I've Pretty much ruled out Richard as a father to William. From Amelia County, VA Judgement Books Nos. 1-2 (1735-1751); Charles sued William for "trespass." Who were these other Weatherfords? were they related in some fashion?

  1840 Census, South Carolina, Spartanburg, there are NO Weatherfords, Wetherfords, Witherfords listed.
 Did William die? James and family migrated to White County Tennessee about 1832/1833.
  There is an "Elish. Weatherford" mentioned on the same page as William Weatherford in various 1838 Spartanburg Administrative Bonds and another entry for" Wm. & Elish." I suspect that Elisha Weatherford is another of William's sons. Elisha's obituary (found in Southern Christian Advocate Notices 1867-1878 Issue of November 4, 1874, Salt Lake) reads:
  "Mr Elisha Weatherford was Born in VA., April 4th 1802, and died at High Shoals, GA. Sept. 9th 1874. His parents moved to Spartanburg District, S.C., when he was four or five years old, where he was reared, married, and continued to reside until 1833 when he moved to Gwinnet Co. GA. He leaves a wife and several children."
  The above obituary is compelling evidence of a connection. William and James Weatherford were the only Weatherford families residing in Spartanburg District from ca 1806-1807 to the mid 1830's. Elisha is said to have had a son named, Willliam James Weatherford, William James had a son named, John Chapman Elisha Weatherford. (John Chapman was the name of Jane's father and brother).
  And finally, there are at least three descendants of James with the name, Jane, Rebecca, and Rebecca Jane (Rebecca was James' first wife). Jane Chapman's nephew was named Memory Chapman. One of James' son and grandson were named Memory Chapman Weatherford.
  Below are the only "crumbs" of information I've found in the Spartanburg records to date;
