Henry (aged 30) and Maria (29) came as assisted immigrants to Australia in 1849 aboard the “The Victoria”, which sailed from Plymouth. They arrived in Botany Bay on 2 September 1849. Their children, Maria, George, Harry and Elizabeth accompanied them on the voyage. Another young couple, William and Mary FORD, who were ?perhaps brother and sister-in-law of Henry, and their infant daughter Sarah A., were also on the ship. Maria’s sister, Ann CROSS (34), her husband, James CROSS (36) and their children James (13), Henry (11), Ann (7), George (5) and Mary (1) were also onboard.

Henry and Maria Ford were tenant farmers on William Lowe’s “St Leonards” estate from 1851 to 1861.

He bought 1600 acres, comprising two portions of 640 and 960 acres, bounded on the south by “St. Leonards” and on the north by “Cape Vale”. He named the purchase “Holbrook” from the old English “Holbroc” (the stream in the hollow) and Holbrook House overlooking the Dorset Downs and near Wincanton. He and his family resided here4. In 1870, Henry purchased a hardwood timber license, in the Dungog district. The 1885 Return of Stock and Stockholders lists Henry Ford of “Holebrook” in possession of 1640 acres, with 10 horses, 80 cows and 12 pigs.
