One of the first memories that comes to my mind are the meals that she cooked. She was a great cook. Breakfast seemed like a menu at a restaurant with all the food on the table. I remember the first morning she surprised me with oatmeal because my Mom told her it was one of my favorites. She placed this huge bowl of oatmeal down in front of me as well as a pitcher of milk. I looked for the sugar on the table but could not find it. Aunt Lucille asked what I was looking for and I told her the sugar. She said that she didn't keep sugar because she was on a diet but passed this odd shaped bottle to me with a label marked "saccharin" on it. She told me to just sprinkle it all over and it tasted just like sugar. I thought this was neat until I took the first bite! I can't even begin to express how awful it tasted but I knew I had to eat every bite since she had made it especially for me. Aunt Lucille fixed oatmeal for me every morning for breakfast during our visit in WA and with a smile in her eyes and a hug around my shoulders, she told me I was special as I was the only one she would let use her special sugar. For years after that, I never ate oatmeal unless I checked first that there was real sugar available. I also remember that she had an electric stove at the "tree farm" but she always cooked on the wood stove in the back bedroom as often as possible. I think I hauled half of WA state's wood supply to that stove while we vacationed there. It was fastinating to watch her in action. We would go blueberry pickin' and Aunt Lucille would tell me not to eat too many or we wouldn't have enough for the cobbler. But I would sneak peeks and saw that she ate as many as I did. The only difference was she didn't have the telltale blue stains all over her as I did. When she would catch me peeking she would laugh and then tell me that I was eating all the berries. My Aunt Lucille had a love of life and cared about people. In 1964 when my family visited again, Aunt Lucille cared for three ladies in her home in town. While visiting one day, one lady, by the name of Mary Elizabeth McDonald gave me a book she had written called "Bits of Philosophy." Every time I notice the book on the shelf, it brings back all the memories of time spent with Aunt Lucille and Uncle Fred. My Aunt Lucille was a happy and loving person who holds a very special place in my heart and my memories. ********** STORY TOLD BY LUCILLE BELLE WOOLEY TO THE FRAME FAMILY: "One year when we were short of food and money, Fred went out one night and shot a deer. The problem was, it wasn't deer season. Very shortly after Fred brought the deer home, the game warden showed up at the house and asked Fred if he had been hunting. Fred told him 'No.' While this conversation was taking place, I was busy pulling the deer into our bed and then climbed in next to the deer under the covers. The game warden asked to see me and Fred told him I was sick in bed. The game warden insisted on seeing for himself, so Fred escorted the game warden into our bedroom. When he saw I was in bed he turned and walked out into the other room with Fred and told him that he had heard the gun shots in the proximity of our house and would check out the area. The game warden was pretty sure that Fred had been hunting, but couldn't prove it since we were both at the house and there was no sign of the deer. After the game warden left, we pulled the deer out of the bed and butchered it and had food for the table." ********** NEWSPAPER CLIPPING - CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Mrs. Fred Wooley celebrated her 79th birthday at her home on July 30. Those attending were her four daughters and other guests. Ina and Teddy Taylor of Hunters. Also guests were Mrs. Buelah Amer and grandson Eddie Wooly of Colville, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Naff of Colville and Mrs. Nellie Carlson of Colville. ********** HISTORY OF FRED AND LUCILLE HOUSE IN TOWN BY SHIRLEY DODSON: ...The house that you speak of where Lucille kept the elderly ladies was built by my Dad who was a building contractor here in Colville, and he built it over the top of the city swimming pool when it was abandoned and a new one built in the park. My folks lived in it themselves for a time till they decided they needed a smaller place because of their age, and built next door. Shirley Dodson, Northeast Washington Genealogical Society, Collville Public Library, 195 S. Oak, Colville, WA 99114 - dated Aug. 31, 1998. NOTE: In 1964 when the Frames visiting the Wooley's in WA, Lucille cared for three elderly ladies in the house in town. Can only remember one of the ladies names: Mary Elizabeth McDonald. Ms McDonald gave Merrie Lynn Frame Smith a book called "Bits of Philosophy" that she had written. ********** OBITUARY: Lucille B.
