Privy Councillor, Lieutenant of Calais, Constable and Treasurer of England, son and heir of Richard Wydeville, Knt., of Grafton Regis, Northamptonshire and the Mote, near Maidstone, Kent, King's esquire, Seneschal of Normandy, treasurer-general of Normandy, Captain of Guines and Caen, Lieutenant of Calais, Constable of the Tower of London and Rochester Castle, by Joan, daughter of Thomas Bittlesgate. He fought in the French wars under King Henry V and John, Duke of Bedford. He was knighted in 1426 at Leicester by King Henry VI. In 1435 he was a knight bachelor in the Regent's court and is said to have been captured by the French at Gerberoy. He was in the Earl of Suffolk's retinue in 1436. He took part in the attempt to relieve Meaux in 1439. In 1440 he and his wife were part of the escort of Margaret of Anjou coming to England for her marriage. He was created Lord Rivers 9 May 1448 in tail male. In 1461 he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Towton, but soon obtained a pardon from King Edward IV. On 24 May 1466 he was created Earl of Rivers. SIR RICHARD WYDEVILLE, 1st Earl Rivers, was executed after the Battle of Edgecote without trial outside Coventry, Warwickshire 12 August 1469.
