Notes
a. Note:   DEATHS OF THE DAY-The Daily News Standard, 5/28/1908 - Mary Elizabeth Walters In the death of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Walters, aged 90 years, Fairchance and vicinity has lost one of the oldest and best known Christian women it has ever had. She passed away at 4:50 a.m., Thursday, May 28, 1908, just five weeks to the day since she fell down a flight of stairs at the home of her son, James A. Walters, with whom she had spent her last years. Her fall caused her death and she had patiently borne her intense suffering with remarkable fortitude and patience. She had walked up the stairs about 11 o’clock when she was it is thought, seized with a stroke of paralysis and fell backwards down stairs. She had suffered two strokes of paralysis and her death was daily expected after she sustained this bad fall. It was necessary to put 11 stitches in the wound on her head caused by the accident, and her living five weeks after being nearly scalped as she was, is indicative of the remarkable vitality that has always characterized her. Deceased was born January 1, 1818, near Uppermiddletown, and lived there until moving to Fairchance in the year of 1868. She joined the M.E. Church early in life and gave all of her long and useful life to its service. Her maiden name was Beckett. She was married to Thomas Henry Walters who died about seventeen years ago and to them were born eight children. Six of these survive, they being: James A. Walters, and William Benton Walters, Fairchance; Mrs. Sarah Bish, Knoxdale, Pa; Mrs. Margaret Wilson, Uniontown; Jacob H. Walters, Youngstown, Ohio; and Mrs. Jennie (Ryan) Johnson, Smithfield. There are also 31 living grandchildren and 20 living great grandchildren, making a total of 57 living descendants. Funeral Sunday, May 31, at the Fairchance M.E. Church at 10:30, with services by the pastor, Rev. J. T. Eastburn. Interment in White Rock Cemetery
