Note:   Robert (Bob) James Weiland Sr. CONNEAUT LAKE, PA. - Robert (Bob) James Weiland Sr., formerly of Conneaut Lake, PA, dearly loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed from us into the loving arms of God on Saturday, May 21, 2005, at the age of 84 at Inn-Conneaut Health Center, Conneaut, Ohio, after a three-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease), surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born in Pittsburgh, PA, February 15, 1921, the fifth of ten children of the late Albert A. Weiland Sr. and Amelia (Reckinger) Weiland. He married Betty Jane Backstrom, April 21, 1945, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. As a World War II United States Army Veteran, he served first in the Pacific Theater as a Technical Sergeant and then as a Special Service Officer in Japan. Following his discharge, he and his wife moved to Conneaut Lake, PA, where they resided until November 2003. Robert was a self-employed Building Contractor and a Realtor with Meadville Realtors until retirement in 1989. Robert was a Founding Member of Our Lady Queen of the Americas Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut Lake, PA. He assisted six Pastors, including Rev. John McAndrew, Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Toland, Rev. John Murray, Rev. Msgr. Edward Zeitier, Rev. Msgr. John Lucas and Rev. Steve Anderson. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and served on the Church Cemetery Committee. He also served as a past president of the Church Council and had the privilege of being an usher for fifty-six years, from 1946 through 2002. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 6937 of Conneaut Lake, PA, served as past commander of the Conneaut Lake American Legion Post #587, where he was a longtime member, a member of the Meadville B.P.O. Elks #219 and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #2006. As a life-long resident of Conneaut Lake, Robert gave of himself as a regular volunteer both at church and in the community, where he could always be counted upon to help others. He will be missed by those who knew and respected him as a businessman, by his longtime neighbors and those who shared a special bond of friendship with him, but most of all by his family who cherished him for the strength and love he gave to them through his lifetime. Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; daughters, Daryl J. Weiland and Darlene J. Kozesky (Tom), all of Ohio; and son, Robert J., Jr. (Sue) of Philadelphia, PA.; seven grandchildren, Paul R. Jr., Pamela R., Phillip R. (Jessica) and Patrick R. (Frances) Popka, Stephen G. Katchur, Jon T. Kozesky and Robert J. Weiland III; two great-grandsons, Ethan T. and Jonathan P. Popka; two sisters, Marie Consla and Alice Sippy (Don) of Meadville, PA.; three brothers, Kenneth J. (Betty) of Florida, Richard T. of Colorado, and his twin, Ronald T. (Farrah) of California; and many nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Gladys Wayne and Dorothy Cornelius, his older two twin brothers, Albert A. Jr. and Edward A., preceded him in death. The family welcomes friends who wish to celebrate his life with them on Monday (today) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at DICKSON FUNERAL HOME at 130 North Second Street, Conneaut Lake, PA. Vigil service at the funeral home Monday evening 7 p.m. A funeral Mass and burial services will be held at Our Lady Queen of Americas, Conneaut Lake, on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
