He served in Co F of the 12th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry and was captured by the enemy near Columbia, Tenn. He was held as a prisoner at the Notorious Anderson ville Prison. While in Prison, he contracted an affliction of the spine, disease of eyes, and condition of the nerves which eventually led to his death.Family story is Winfield was involved in battle, was "hit' and, evidently knocked unconscious. One of his brothers came over, looked at him and thought he was dead. The Brother reported to the family back home that winfield had been killed. His wife, Flavilla, marriked again to Zachariah Miner. The Story goes that Winfields dad owned a ferry across the Clinch River about four miles above the Tenn Border in Virginia. His dad saw him coming across the ferry and up the hill and said"Here comes Winfield."The brother now there with his dad said,"No, Dad, don't you remember, he was killed in the War!" The The Father said, "I know that is Winfield, I can tell his walk."It is also told that Winfields Wife Flavilla, was at the home of her father , with her new baby, when Winfield came looking for her. She thought she was seeing a ghost when she saw him. She was so scared at the sight of him she ran through the house and triked to climb out a back window. When Winfield saw her he said to her,"You dont have to be scared, I'm not a ghost."
