Notes
a. Note:   The Families of Edd Herrin and Georgina Zachary by Clovis La Fleur (December, 1999) William Herrin, Sr. was born in 1807 in what was called the Mississippi Territory at that time. [Notes 1,2] Little is known about his early life or the exact area of Mississippi where he spent his youth. Before 1825, he may have married a women whose name and family is unknown. [Note 3] This event is likely to have occurred in Mississippi or Louisiana. William and his bride lived in Louisiana at the time of the birth of there only child, James Herrin, in 1826. [Notes 1,2] I would speculate this birth took place in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. However, James could have been the brother of William, althought to date no other Herrin has been found living in this area of Louisiana at the time. Now, before these events, the family of Daniel R. Stark and Nancy (Hawley) Stark moved to Port Allen, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana from New York before June, 1817 and after Prudence Jane Stark was born in New York in 1815. [Note 3a] Daniel R. Stark died in 1820 in this Parish leaving Nancy Hawley Stark with 5 children. Nancy would then marry Enos Hardin and the family moved to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Nancy's last child, Napoleon Bonaparte Hardin, was born in this Parish in 1828. [Note 3a] Nancy's oldest daughter, Sarah Maria Stark, married John Taylor Lewis in Ouachita Parish December 28, 1828. [Note 4] William married Prudence Jane Stark around 1834, probably in Ouachita Parish, since her mother, Nancy Hawley was there as implied in the above marriage of Sarah Maria. [Notes 1,2] Prudence was born in 1815 in New York. [Notes 1,2] The marriage could have occurred earlier. After the marriage, I believe William & Prudence set up their residence in Ouachita Parish before the birth of their first child, William Herrin, Jr. in 1835. According to my Grandmothers records, William, Jr. was born in Louisiana. William and Prudence had six other children named, George (1839), Andrew Jackson (1841), Mary (1841-1930), Steve(1844), Asa (1846), Edward E. (1849-1932), and Matilda (1852), all probably born in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. [Notes 1,2] Now, Ouachita Parish at the time of these events was located in North Central Louisiana with its northern border being shared with present day Arkansas. Because of the Lewis/Stark marriage, it would seem reasonable to speculate William Herrin, his son [Or Brother] James Herrin, the Stark family, and the Lewis family were living in the same locality. However, members of the Lewis family could have been in Texas by 1838 for the father of John Lewis, Col. Samuel S. Lewis, is recorded as having died in Jasper County January 10, 1838. [Note 7] Another event indicating the Lewis family was in Ouachita Parish is the reported death of Charlotte Lewis around 1829 in this Parish. [Note 5] James Herrin, married Nancy Jane Lewis, probably in 1845 ,the oldest daughter of John Lewis and Sarah Stark. [Notes 1,2] I would speculate John Lewis and Sarah (Stark) Lewis were living in Texas at the time of this marriage for their second child, William McFarland Lewis, has been reported to have been born in 1834 in Texas. [Note 2] However, James Herrin and Nancy Jane Lewis set-up residence in Louisiana since their first child, Samuel McFarland Herrin, was born June 30, 1846 in Louisiana, probably in Calcasieu Parish.[ Note 6] The 1850 census for Calcasieu Parish, LA records a very young Robert Eubank"Bob" Herrin as a member of this family born in LA. He is reported to have been born December 8, 1849. James and Nancy had 7 children. James Herrin died in 1864 in Newton County and Nancy Jane Lewis died in 1868 in Newton county. The first record we have of the William Sr. second family in Newton is the second marriage in April of 1863 of Sarah Lewis to Asa Herrin in Newton County.[Note 7] Sarah was married first to Henry H. Kirkum June 6, 1861 in Newton County. Sarah Lewis was Nancy Janes sister and Asas cousin, which was not unusual for the times. Sometime before this date and after the birth of Matilda in 1852, the William Herrin, Sr. family, probably following James Herrin, made the migration to Texas. It is known James Herrin died in 1864 in Newton County and one can only speculate he may have been the reason they moved to Texas after William, Sr. died ca. 1852-54. There is no information available on the death location of William or Prudence, although a good location to search would be Calcasieu Parish. We can safely assume Prudence was still living at the time of Matildas birth in Louisiana in 1852. Mary Herrin was born in 1842 according to the 1850 census for Calcasieu Parish listing a Bill Heran as head of the house with a spouse named Prudence. There is a record from the Confederate Pension Application Files, Texas State Archives, of Andrew J. Herrin, Claimant 11073, pension # 11073, Newton County, indicating he may have been a participant in the Civil War. Although he made the claim in Texas, he may have joined in Louisiana. My grandmothers records show he married Mary Jobner. George Herrin married Mary Drake. Edward E. Herrin and Georgina Ann Zachary where married March 18, 1882 in Newton County, Texas. The couple settled first near Newton, Texas, possibly in the Devils Pocket area, where there children named, William (Called Willy by Maude) (1885-1956), Asa Louis (Called Louis by Maude) ( 1886-1980), Sarah Edna (1888-1962), Maude Mae (1890-1982), Lula (1891-1892), Edger (1893-1968), and Arthur (1896-1973) were born. The family moved to Leesville, Vernon Parish, Louisiana sometime after the birth of Arthur. They were living near this community in 1909, according to Maudes account,"When I First Heard of the Pentecost." Edward died in 1932 in Texas. Georgina died in 1935 in Beaumont, Texas. They are both buried in the Bob Herrin Cemetery located in Newton County.[Note 9] To further illustrate the close association of the Herrin, Stark, and Lewis families, Matilda Herrin married Napoleon B. Lewis, son of John and Sarah (Stark) Lewis February 2, 1869 in Newton County. They would have also been cousins since Matildas mother was Prudence Stark, Sarah Starks sister. Her concern had always been her father would not be saved before he died. This is her reflections as she sat beside his bed on the night he died. Editors note: The copy I worked from was Copied by Mary Jeanette La Fleur. I have altered some passages for clarity and hope the intended message has not been changed. (Clovis La Fleur, Jr. Dec. 28, 1998) Edd Herrin died 20 minutes before 4 0'clock, Nov. 28, Monday morning before day light, 1932. The Night Edd Herrin Died When my father died, Ill always have these sweet memories as I sat by his bedside. I said, " Papa, let us pray." I prayed and he knew me so well and held my hand. He would say, "Sweet Jesus, save my soul. I love Thee dear Lord. Please take me home to heaven--Sweet Jesus-- Oh-- I love Thee sweet Jesus. Thank Thee for you saved my soul, sweet Jesus, precious Jesus, I love Thee." He said, "Hurry, I am tired.", and turned over still praying, " I love Thee Lord, sweet Jesus." He only laid then a few minutes and got up and waited on himself (Used the Slop Jar) for his kidneys to act. He lay back down and still praying as I sat by his side, so happy to hear him praying, still softly calling on God and thanking him for saving his soul and he turned over and died instantly. So Sweetly, I shall never forget when my Dear Father died. By Maude Herrin La Fleur
