We have no record of this family in Newton Co. in our 1850 census. The 1860 census date is this: Whitman, Adam age 44 M born -So. Carolina " D. 50 F " " B 28 M " " M 26 Alabama " E 19F " " J 17M " " G 11 " " M 7F " " M 7F " The Census gives no birth date but this would make them having been born in 1853 in ALA. Hope this helps! Will try to find more data for you. Bonnie [MathiasWhitman.FTW] 1990 Yellowed Pages Page 102 and 103 : Volume X X. No.2, A HISTORIC NEWTON COUNTY CEMETERY RECOVERED WHITMAN FAMILY CEMETERY RECLAIMED FROM RAVAGES OF TIME Submitted by Ima Whitman Franks The small cemetery sits frozen in time, a short distance from a farm-to-market road in Newton County, Texas. Old homesteads, gristmills, blacksmith shops, cotton and cane fields once stood nearby. Until recent years, relies from an old water mill could be found along Whitman Mill Creek a few miles south of Bon Weir. Mounds have been found indicating where treasure-seekers thought buried treasure might be recovered. Today, only a few tombstones hint at the presence of the (John) Adam Whitman family who lived here in years past. Adam Whitman, a thrifty farmer, land owner, blacksmith and millwright was once thought to have been one of the wealthiest men in Newton County during and after the Civil War. The historic old cemetery might have remained covered with weeds, sand-burrs and perhaps a few grazing cattle or an occasional wandering deer. It has been restored, though, by descendants of this early pioneer and others who may have ancestors buried there. The now-cleared site is the final resting place of Adam and Dorothy Rickard Whitman, their sons, Benjamin and Jacob; other members of Benjamin's family as well as two of the wives of Adam's son, George; a nephew, John Adam Whitman and several members of his family. The first known burial is that of Jacob Whitman, a 21-year-old son of Adam Whitman, who died of a flu-like illness in 1858. The last burial was that of Emily Foster Whitman, wife of Benjamin Whitman, who succumbed to the great epidemic of influenza in 1918. Now, each year, the third Saturday in April will bring together Stark, Whitman, Herrin, Zachary, Cochran and Foster descendants for a clean-up of the old burial ground. There has been a resurgence of interest in the family graveyard and renewed efforts to reclaim the old cemetery were started in 1987. A great-grandson, Paul Jacobs replaced a partially-downed barbed-wire fence by the installation of a new fence at his own expense. Work began in earnest in 1988, when a group of family members met there not only to plan for restoration of the old cemetery, but with organization of an Adam Whitman Family Association with officers to promote an annual reunion of the descendants of these old pioneer families. The work on the cemetery was continued in April 1989, when underbrush was cleared away, a backwoods country road opened up, the grounds mowed neatly and containers of flowers placed at each grave site. It is hoped that markers will eventually be placed at all graves as there are only a few "store-bought" tombstones and a half-dozen white crosses mark the resting place of those once buried there. A result of the cemetery renewal and clean-up campaign begun in 1987, was a reunion of Whitman descendants which was held on April 22, 1989, at the Lions Club Hall in Buna, Texas. A covered-dish dinner was served to about one hundred and fifty members of the Adam Whitman Family Association and contributions made to defray expenses incurred and to insure a continuation of a Newsletter to be mailed out at intervals during the coming year. Donations are always welcome. Plaques were presented to the oldest member present, the youngest member and to the one having traveled the greatest distance to attend the reunion. There is still a tremendous amount of history to uncover and record along the famous old Sabine; history that family historians and Historical Societies are trying to discover and preserve for coming generations. Many details of the life and times of Adam Whitman were displayed at the reunion hall in Buna. Future plans were made to continue to have the family reunion annually at the same time and same place. The genealogy of the two brothers, Adam and Joseph Whitman is included in the Curtis Jacobs Historical Collection which was donated to the Beauregard Parish Historical Society, De Ridder, Louisiana. Recently, a great grand-daughter of Adam and Dorothy Rickard Whitman compiled a book, "ALL ABOUT THE RIKARDS, of which recounts the colorful history of her great grandmother's ancestor in a 340-page book. It is a history of the family and lineage of the Dutch immigrant, Thomas Riechart, who came to America in 1749 and received a Colonial grant of 350-acres in the Dutch Fork area of South Carolina. The efforts of the cemetery restoration group and those responsible for the preservation of Whitman and Rickard family history are to be commended for their interest in reclaiming an important part of Newton County history as well as bring together the far-flung descendants of Adam and Dorothy Rickard Whitman. Especially to be commended for their interest in preserving their family history were Paul Jacobs, Nina McClendon and Ima (Whitman) Franks, who promoted the project. (Editors Note: Submitted by Mrs. Ima (VVhitman) Franks; 7057 Winburn Drive; Greenwood, LA 71033. Additional note: The Curtis Jacobs historical Collection is also located at the Texas State Library, Sam Houston Regional Library, Liberty, Texas. Original Homestead of John Adam Whitman was 640 acres at above location. Concrete piers are still standing. It is said that the deed granting land to timber company was signed days after death of John Adam Whitman |
