Family moved from Newton County, TX to Beauregard Parish, LA in the Spring of 1871. Joseph and George, both fought along the rivers and marshes of Louisiana and Texas. Both these brothers participated in the Battle of Sabine Pass which prevented the Union Army from sailing up the Sabine River and occupying Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. This hindered the Yankees from attacking the Confederate Army from the south and contributed to the Confederate Victory of General Taylor over General Banks at Mansfield on April 8, 1864. In 1871, Joseph Adam Whitman and his wife, Betty moved over into Louisiana from the Whitman Mill in Newton County. They settled down in Bancroft, not far from his brother Benjamin's home at the Whitman Ferry. Bancroft stretched from Caney Creek to Brushy Creek and was almost a wilderness region at that time. Replacing the old brush arbor my grandfather helped to found the Brushy Creek Baptist Church and many times rode the sixty-five miles both ways to Lake Charles on horseback to take the church's offering for the sparsely settled region, he helped get roads, schools and churches along the old river road in Bancroft. At the death of Joseph Adam Whitman in 1932 at the age of ninety-two, an old trunk was found at his home, and folded in layer upon layer of tissue paper were beautiful satin dresses with bonnets to match.
