Note: , passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2002.Born Oct. 20, 1920, in Bernice, Pa., he was the son of John B. and Maude Bump McDonald. He was a resident of Athens since 1928 and was a 1941 graduate of Athens High School and was inducted into the Athens Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 for football, track and basketball prowess.Cork was a decorated Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He served in the 9th Defense Battalion, an artillery unit stationed on numerous islands in the Pacific. His unit shot down 13 out of 15 Japanese Zeros that flew over his island. When the war was over he was stationed at NAD Earle Colts Neck, N.J., as a "Horse Marine." He was employed with General Electric, Elmira, N.Y., where he retired in 1980 after 40 years of service. Cork was an avid bowler, hunter and fisherman.He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Athens, and a life member of the Skiff Bower Post No. 1536 V.F.W. of Sayre, the American Legion, the Sayre Elks Lodge No. 1140 and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.He was predeceased by his wife, Madelyn, in 1983, and a grandson, Sean, in 1995. He was also predeceased by one sister and five brothers.He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Dave Catlin of Jackson, Mich., Susan and Jack Hartzel of Warren Center, and Linda and Ronald Birdsall of Vestal, N.Y.; his son, Leo "Pat" and Cindy McDonald of Waverly, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Berneda Rhodes of Sayre, Betty McDonald of South Waverly and Helen McDonald of Highsphire, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Bernard Hendershot of Barton, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.Family and friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St., Athens.A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Vincent Langan officiating.Burial will be in the Epiphany Cemetery, Sayre.Memorial donations may be made to Guthrie Hospice, RR 1, Box 14, Towanda, Pa. 18848.
