a. Note:   N34 Lucy wrote in 1920 that Edwin had a common school education and "left a good job in a clothing store at Oskaloosa and started for bleeding Kansas on March 10, 1873. He reached Seneca in the afternoon on March 13th 1873 which was a bright and beautiful day. He took charge of a grocery store the First Exclusive Grocery Store. He stayed in that business until the death of his father at which time he sold the business to his partner and moved to the family farm.

b. Note:   N35 Edwin was born in IN but came to Iowa with the family at the age of 5.

c. Note:   N36 In the fall of 1887 Edwin was nominated on the Republican ticket for the office of County Clerk of Nemaha County. He was elected by a 742 majority. Two years later he was re-nominated and won by a 1030 majority. In 1892 he bought a hardware store in Seneca and continued that business until 1908 when he traded that for some land and continued at the County clerk's office as Deputy Co. Clerk.

d. Note:   N37 Edwin stayed on the family farm about 5 years until he married Virginia C Hale on 10/9/1881 at the home of her parents, AC Hale and Mary Ann Hale 8 miles south east of Seneca on Tennesee Creek.

e. Note:   N38 Edwin came to the Seneca area with his parents who moved there to find a more suitable climate for an ailing sister. They intended to raise beef cattle but James (Edwin's father didn't live long after the move). Edwin came to Seneca as a young man having grown up chiefly in Oskaloosa IA and he got work in a store owned by SS Allen. Here he was acquainted with Maurice Rothchild who was famous for giving away winter coats by throwing them off the roof of his store. Rothchild later moved to Chicago to open his first big store.

f. Note:   N39 On the death of his father Edwin was made executor and guardian of the younger children. John Carr, his older brother was not at home and was working in Chicago. His mother Elizabeth McNeal was an invalid and lived her old age cared for by Cora and Uncle Pet (Orlando) who didn't marry but stayed on the home farm and ran it.
