Notes
a. Note:   Seaman 1850. China ware merchant 1876 Shipmaster 1918 On 25 Feb 1851 Alexander Murdoch joined the DRAKE of Dundee as Mate. He was 29 years old and had Ticket No 26464. His previous ship was SOLICITOR of London.
You say you have his Competency number from the Lloyds Captains Register per TAMH. I suggest an enquiry to the National Maritime Museum, Caird Library in Greenwich, London may be useful. In July we went there for the first time and were most impressed by the staffs helpfulness & knowledge. They said their Captains Registers records were more complete than the TNA / PRO. I was looking for a William MURRISON born 1842 in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire reputed to be a ships master. We found him on microfilmed books & this gave us this gave his Competence for Masters number - ordered this and in half an hour was given his original Competence for Mate & Master papers to read. His application form gave his name, and residence and full birth date and place to confirm it was the right person and included a list of his service record - for Mate certificate from his first going to sea and Masters from the previous Mate certificate. I read & copied the details for no cost but I could have ordered a copy for about 10. Now I don't know about your man but it would be well worth while sending an email inquiry. A pamphlet I picked up gave this website www.nmm.ac.uk
