Joined the Texas rangers at age 18, but his daddy pulled him out (at that time you legally weren’t an adult until 21). Joined again when he turned 21 and his dad couldn’t stop him. (according to uncle phil) When Ida Hill died, ASH was having kidney trouble (18 operations and the removal of one kidney was the eventual solution/result) and was in and out of the hospital so the four youngest kids Albert Phil Billy and Mary were placed in a Christian home (orphanage) where their dad paid for their board for three years. After that, they truck farmed in wimauma (Wimauma, Hillsborough County, Florida). Everybody truck farmed there. The kids would get up at dawn and pick strawberries until 9 when school started, everybody’s knees would be muddy for school. (according to uncle phil) Ash was a friend of Will Rodgers (met him when he used to drive cattle for his dad) and for the rest of his life, every time there was a new will Rogers movie, he had to go see it. (according to uncle phil) When ASH died he was a night watchman in a warehouse (according to uncle phil) from all the confusion about his name being Sidney, and from the 1910 census which lists his name not as Albert Sideny Hand, but as Sidney A. Hand, i think it is right to assume that he went by his middle name
