The foremost is that he came with his father in the English Warship to Lynn, Massachusetts in 1635. His father came as one of the leaders of a company originating in Maidstone, England. This company settled in Lynn in 1644 purchased with the aid of the governors of Connecticut and New Haven a tract of land for 30# and named it South Hampton. Source:James Hand 157 E. The first inhabitants of East Hampton settled in the southern section where John Hand's house was on the west side of the main street. 1639 residence Maidstone, Long Island, New York. He was one of a small company, who took up land adjoining Southampton on the east, and planted there a new setlement - first called by the settlers Maidstone. Maidstone is present day East Hampton. MAR 1644 residence Southampton, Long Island, Suffolk County, New York. The first distinct mention of him in America. He enrolled in the third Ward of Southampton. OCCUPATION John was listed as a whaleman or whale fisherman on 7th March l6 44 in Southampton. He was one of 44 male inhabitants of the town at this time. RELIGION He was a Puritan seeking religious freedom. DIED abt 24 Jan 1660 / 1661 East Hampton, Long Island, New York Note: He was probably buried in "Southend" burying ground but there is no stone there.
