Notes
a. Note:   Born in Coswell county, N.C., June 22, 1812; died Sept. 29, 1843 Noel Mason was the Clerk of the Circuit Court (County Clerk) for Shelby county, Alabama in the early 1840's. Many land transactions were recorded by him as well as many probate court procedings which were filed and found on microfilm of the Shelby County records of 1839 to 1844. The following was published in newspapers of the area upon his death: "November 8, 1843 Died in Columbiana , Shelby County, Alabama on the 29th of September 1843, NOEL MASON, Esq. Clerk of the County Court, aged about 31 years. At a meeting of the citizens of Columbia and the vicinity at the Court house on the 30th of September to take into consideration the subject of this dispensation of Providence, on motion of GEORGE S. GRASTY, Esq. HON. CHARLES R. GIBBS was called to chair and Y. A. CARR was appointed Secretary. On motion of S. BRASHER, Esq. a committee was appointed by the chair to prepare and report suitable resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting consisting of WADE H. GRIFFIN, J. M. McCLANAHAN, S. BRASHER, L. P. BRASHER, and M. J. HORTON, who retired and in a short time reported the following preamble and resolutions: 1. Resolved That we regard the deceased while living as a faithful public officer, a kind and affectionate relative and an honest man. 3. Resolved That the proceedings of the meeting be published in the Democratic Watchtower, Flag of the Union and the Wetumpka papers after being signed by the President and countersigned by the Secretary. CHARLES R. GIBBS, Pres. Y. A. CARR, Secy." It has never been determined that Noel Mason ever married or the reason for his early death at 31 years of age. Noel Mason was appointed executor of the estate of his father, Wiley Mason's, Will, but he was never able to perform this duty because of his own death. The following material was provided by Anne Mason Stapleton, gg grand daughter of David George Mason who was a brother to Noel Mason: Noel Mason is buried in the Columbiana Cemetery which is located two blocks from the center of downtown Columbiana, Shelby county, Alabama. His grave marker is close to the marker of his brother, David George Mason, and a David G. Mason, who was born July 15, 1825 and died at the young age of sixteen years. As of this time I have been unable to connect him to any of the known Mason families. Noel Mason's gravestone contains the following inscription: "Erected to the memory of NOEL MASON who was born in the State of North Carolina - Caswell County on the 22nd of June 1812 and died in Columbiana, Shelby County, Alabama on the 29th of September 1843 aged 31 years 8 mos. 12 days Leaving a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn the loss of an affecionate (sic) and worthy kinsman - a faithful public officer and a humble man"
