a. Note:   s 1850 US Census, Mount Vernon 10th District, Jefferson Co., Illinois, dwelling 944/944. 1860 US Census, Twp. T4 SR 2E, Elk Prairie Twp., Jefferson Co., Illinoois, page 306, dwelling 2206/2251, with wife, Sarah; son John Y., and Hugh W.; and daughter Mary J. 1870 US Census, Elk Prairie Twp. T4S R2E, Jefferson Co., Illinois, dwelling 199/192, with wife, Sarah; sons, John, Charles and Noel; daughters, Mary, Alpha, Angelina, and Nancy. Shown on the 1880 US Census, Elk Prairie, Jefferson, Illinois, page 479B, with daughters, Mary, Ava, Kate and Anna; sons Charles and Noel. Charles Mason was a frequent mover in his early years. He was born in Caswell Co., NC, one of seven children. His mother , Nancy Beusey died sometime between 1822 after the birth of her seventh child and when Charles' father, Wiley Mason re-married, a Nancy Sims in 15 December 1825. In 1827 his father and family then relocated to Riddleton, Smith Co., TN, and apparently Charles moved with them as he would have been approximately 12 years old at the time. Charles Mason is found in the 1850 US Census for Jefferson Co., Illinois, showing him living in a rooming house in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson Co., Illinois and showing his occupation as schoolteacher. It is not known when he located to Jefferson Co., but he is found on a list of Elk Prairie Township, Jefferson Co. as having purchased two land grants; one for 80 acres and one for 99.15 acres; both were dated 13 Jan 1843. He is next found in Shelby Co., Alabama where he married Sarah Ann Williams 28 Nov 1853. Sometime after their son, John Yancy Mason, was born 10 Oct 1854 in Shelby Co., AL they relocated to Illinois. They were found in the 1860 US Census for Jefferson Co., Illinois living in Elk Prairie Township, with Charles occupation listed as farmer. They had two additional children at this time and it showed them both as being born in Illinois, the elder of the two, Mary J. Mason being three years old, and the other Hugh W. being one year old, so it is assumed that they moved from Alabama to Illinois between 1854 and 1857. Charles resided in Jefferson Co., IL throughout his remaining years. Wall's History of Jefferson County Illinois, by John Wall, 1909, lists on page 193 that the Masons were among the first settlers of Elk Prairie Township, Jefferson Co., IL. On a list of Jefferson Co., IL Land Grants for Elk Prairie Township, Charles Mason is listed as receiving two land grants 13 Jan 1843, one for forty acres and one for 99.15 acres. On 31 Mar 1870 he received another land grant for 40 acres. Charles is buried next to his wife, Sarah Ann, in Mason Cemetery which was located on his home place near Bonnie, IL.
Note:   Charles Mason married Sarah Ann Williams there in 1853 and moved to Jefferson county, Illinoi
