Note: ple for permission to use their land when settling his claim. He lived in a cabin near the Molalla River on the present site of Liberal, and operated a ferry. His children played with native Molala children and learned some words from their language. When Wright died of smallpox, he was hastily buried on his farmland in an isolated grave. William Larkin also died early of illness and was buried on his claim near Bear Creek, by present-day Ona Way. Many early settlers were buried in small family cemeteries on a distant corner of their claim. Some of these cemeteries remain around the Molalla area.
