Note: o St Clair County, Illinois near Belleville where he becaeme a farmer. The rest of his children except one where born there. The last being born in Oregon. William Engle's first trip across the plains he was the captain of a wagon train, starting March 18, 1845 and arrived in Oregon City in the middle of December. Took his donation land claim of 640 acres in what is now Molalla. After Martha's death he returned by way of Cape Horn and the Mississippi river to Missouri where he married again. In 1851he accompanied another wagon train leaving in April and arriving in Oregon City in October. The William Engle family settled the southeast claim corner in 1846. Engle was a carpenter by trade, and his first house was made from hand-hewn logs. He used traditional carpentry methods learned in the homeland. At the time, there were no sawmills in the area to provide lumber. Engle was married to Martha Chance, daughter of William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame. She died in 1849 leaving her husband and six children. Engle eventually sold the clad to Oliver Robbins.
