Note: Watermelon Photograph called Bettie From notes written May 9, 1930 "Mathew Duty and one other wer scouting to protect the men who were working in timber. Uncle Mathew always outrun the indians on his fine gray and white horse, but they must have been keen to out-wit him. He was lying by [a] log scalped when they found him later and he must have been the one you mentioned." "I remember my grandmother was said to have one day heard the approach of men and closed the doors and windows of hre home hastily - holding the last door open a crack waiting to let in three white men who were being pursued by indians. One of the men fell near the house and she saw the indians scalp him before the other two men reached the door."
