Harding and Phebe A. with children - Mary (16), Georgiana Cadwell (19), John F. Cadwell (18) and Sylvia A. Cadwell (10). According to my wife’s aunt, Sylvia’s granddaughter, Mary had left Sylvia with relatives in New York when she went to California. Harding shows up with Cadwell in an Illinois history. also in this same census is Clarissa Cadwell age 16 with Dominick and Sylvia (age 42) Wilkin in Mount Hope, Orange Co., NY. 1870 census Shasta County CA Mary G. Cadwell age 43 bp Wales Alfred W. Cadwell age 19 bp Illinois Teamster Gertrude age 13 bp CA other Cadwell's born in NY in Stephenson Co., Illinois in 1850 census: one family George S. Cadwell age 34 and fam (wife Clarissa bp NY and christophre, Ralph, Issac, William, Elizabeth and Sylvia age 2) (and they in same town Oneco) it is my belief that they were related, probably brothers. Family history from Kevin Silberzahn {According to my wife’s aunt, Sylvia’s granddaughter, Mary had left Sylvia with relatives in New York when she went to California. Harding shows up with Cadwell in an Illinois history. According to the ‘History of Stephenson County, Illinois: a record of its settlement, organization, and three-quarters of a century of progress’ by Addison L. Fulwider, Chicago, S.J. Clarke Pub, Co., 1910, Volume 1, page 137: “In the fall of 1839, George S. Cadwell, Alfred Cadwell and Z.U. Harding came to Oneco from Orange County, New York. They walked from Detroit, Michigan, through Chicago and Freeport. After taking a claim in Section 32, they walked to Milwaukee and took a boat for New York. In 1841, George S. Cadwell married and came west to settle on his claim.” Illinois land records list Alfred Cadwell as purchasing 16000 acres of land in section 36 on 19 January 1843. This indicates to me that Alfred came back to Illinois a couple of years after George. Then in another ‘History of Stephenson County…’ published in Chicago by Western Historical Co. in 1880, page 282-283, it states that Alfred Cadwell was one of the people who left Stephenson County in 1849 for California – the Gold Rush. This explains why he was listed in the 1850 Census in Sacramento, California.} Who are Georgiana Cadwell b 1841 NY and John F Cadwell born 1842 illinois? They are with Thomas Harding family in 1860 censes with Sylvia Cadwell dau of Alfred Cadwell and Mary George. Sylvia does have an older brother John b abt 1843, but he is in California in 1860 census with parents. Family story is that Alfred practiced law on the trail (even though he wasn't a lawyer) because he was the most educated. grandaughter Sylvia never let on he was a blacksmith, always tried to puff up her family history, thus the emphasis on the law on the train and no mention of the blacksmithing.
