a. Note:   r was sent to a Bessac in Louisanna. He was sent to Hudson NY to live with his grandmother Marietta Hammond, whom he had never met. He was sent to a prep school (a very good school) and every attention given him, etc., but he was not happy. At age 16, as soon as he finished the school, he made his way back to Wisconsin to family friend Dr. Satterlee (his stepfather) who apprenticed himout to be a printer, thus the family printing tradition began. Josiphine Bessac Landon In 1920 sold the Brentwood News to Sam Hill named for his grandfather who owned a hardware store in Hudson NY that was started in 1830s when his grandmother died, he was left with a couple thousand dollars, which was a large sum in those days, and that was when they began their westward movement, buying up small town newspaper, building it up, moving on, and having a baby in every state.
