a. Note:   When Pearl came to an age that interested boys in the community of Fiddletown, California, it was decided to send her away from the local bumpkins. Perhaps Pearl was becomming too attractive to her father in the eyes of her mother. Nettie had once scolded Pearl for sitting on her father's lap because that was supposed to be Nettie's place. Whatever the reason, Pearl made a major transition from the back woods family homestead to the glitter of San Francisco. It was arranged for her to live in the same apartment complex as her uncle, Forest Thrush at 50 or 51 Portola Street in San Fransisco. The move was just in time for the 1906 earthquake. It must have been an impressive quake for this teen age girl as her quarters were located on the second story. She told of how they all had to live in the park as everyone was afraid to return to the standing buildings. Drinking water had to be brought across the bay by ship from the north side of the bay.
