Notes for Levi Young: Obituary, Deshler Flag, December 4, 1903: "Another pioneer of this community has been removed from our midst by the cold hand of death, and the homes of a large circle of relatives are in mourning over the departure of a dear, good old man. It is with sorrow that we are called upon to announce the death of Mr. Levi Young, which occurred at noon on Wednesday last at his home in this city, after having been confined to his bed about two months, death resulting from a cancer in the throat. "The deceased was born near Boonsboro, Washington county, Maryland, Nov. 11th, 1826. He came to Miami county, Ohio, in 1845. He was united in marriage to Marie Shroyer, February 10th, 1848, and to this union were born 8 children -- 6 sons and 2 daughters, 20 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Two sons and one daughter have preceded him to the great beyond. "In March, 1853, he moved his family to Shelby county, Ohio, and resided there until the 18th of October, 1888, when he moved to Deshler. He united with the United Brethren church in 1855 and was a faithful member for a number of years and then joined the German Baptist church and remained a member of that church until his death, Nov. 26, 1903, aged 77 years and 15 days. "The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. David Lytle, and the remains were laid to rest in Woodlawn cemetery. "Mr. Young was a most estimable citizen, kind-hearted, obliging, and always had a kind word for everybody he met. It it could be possible for one to die without an enemy, we believe he was one of them, and his place as a citizen among us will be hard to fill." Henry County, Ohio, by W. W. Campbell, reprinted from History of the Maumee River Basin, by Charles Elihu Slocum, M.D., Ph.D., L.L.D., Indiana and Toledo: Bowen & Slocum, 1905, reprinted by The Hubbard Company, Defiance, Ohio, 1982, pp. 929-930: "...Levi and Maria (Shroyer) Young, the former having been one of the early citizens of Deshler. He was a native of Frederick county, Maryland, born November 11, 1826, the son of George and Malinda (Sanner) Young, both also natives of Maryland. George Young first married a Miss Yost, with whom he came to Ohio, settling near Dayton, where she died and lies buried. George then returned to Maryland, where he again married and spent the balance of his life. To this second union were born these children, Lydia, Levi, Winton, Malinda, Mary and James. In 1848 the widow and these children came to Ohio and joined Levi Young, who was then living in Clarke county, where she died. Levi Young came to Ohio in 1845, joining his brother, who was then living in Miami county. In 1848 he married and settled in Clarke county, removing four or five years later to Shelby county, and still later to Logan county. A few years later he returned to Shelby and in 1888 came to Deshler, where he lived the remainder of his life. He bought one hundred and twenty acres of land in section 2, but never located on it, his son, [James L. Young], taking up his home there instead. [Levi's wife], nee Mariah Shroyer, was born in Miami county, Ohio, on June 2, 1828, the daughter of Jacob and Susanna (Fushhour) Shroyer, both natives of Maryland, and whose children were as follows: Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, John, Catharine, Susanna, Julia A. and Mariah. To Levi and Maria Young were born eight children, Henry, George, Susanna, Jacob, Malinda, James L., Howard G. and Levi D." Notes for Mariah Shroyer: Deshler Flag, August 30, 1912: "The will of the late Mariah Young, of Deshler, was opened and read in probate court on Saturday. Notes for Malinda Alfereta Young: Obituary, Deshler Flag, July 30, 1925: "Mrs. Israel Weatherhead, who has been ill for several months, passed away at her home in Deshler Sunday evening, July 26. Although death was not entirely unexpected, yet it came as a shock to the many relatives and friends in the community. She was a kindly, Christian woman, delighting in helping others and to know her was to honor and respect her. She was a resident of Deshler nearly thirty-five years, had a wide acquaintance and her passing is mourned by a wide circle of friends. "Malinda Alphretta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Young, was born in Logan county, Ohio, September 21, 1858, and was aged 66 years, 10 months and 5 days. "On December 26, 1876 she was united in marriage with Israel Weatherhead. To this union was born but one child, a son, who died on the day of his birth. Loving children and realizing that it was not thier lot to raise their own, they reared two foster children, caring for them and doing all they would have done for their own until thy reached their majority and married. Samuel Randolph was as their son. He is now a resident of Indianapolis. Mary Halstead was given a home with them and every advantage that parents would have given until she married. She is now Mrs. Robert Gregory and resides at Dexter, Michigan. "Mr. and Mrs. Weatherhead moved to Deshler January 1, 1890, and with the exception of two years spent on their farm near Harlan, Michigan, have resided all the years since in this place. "Besides the husband there are left to mourne, the two foster children and three brothers -- Henry Young of Deshler, James Young of Brimfield, Indiana, and L. D. Young, Cromwell, Indiana, and a host of other near relatives and friends. "Funeral services were conducted from the United Brethren church at 2:00 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Arnold, sr., her former pastor, who some years ago was pastor of the Deshler circuit. Burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery by a nephew of the deceased, who is in the employ of the W. W. Stewart company." Notes for Israel Hamlen Weatherhead: Obituary, Deshler Flag, October 9, 1930: "Mr. Israel H. Weatherhead, long time resident and highly respected citizen of Deshler, passed away quite suddently last Thursday at his home here. "For the past few years, Mr. Weatherhead's health had been failing, and several years ago, he was compelled to give up his active work in the employ of the Deshler Farmers Elevator Company. In the past few weeks, the deceased was seen up town, and few of his friends realized his serious condition, until word came of his demise. He died at his home on N. Lind Street. "Israel Hamlen Weatherhead, son of William H. and Amanda A. Weatherhead, was born January 5, 1857 and departed this life at his late home October 2, 1930 at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 27 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Malinda Alfereta Young on December 22nd, 1876 and to this union one child was born, who passed to its heavenly home in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Weatherhead raised two foster children. "Mr. Weatherhead was bereaved of his companion on July 26th, 1925, after 49 years of wedded life. He had been a faithful emply of the Deshler Farmers Elevator Company of Deshler for about 15 years. "The deceased spent about forty years of his life in Deshler where he was well known to all, being an honest, industrious man, always having a warm spot in his heart for those he knew. "He leaves to mourn their loss three sisters, Mrs. Francis Wambaugh of Degraff, O., Mrs. Sarah Heminger of Jackson, Michigan and Dell Latimer of Battle Creek, Michigan. One brother and two sisters and one half-brother and six half-sisters have passed to their crowning to await his arrival. "Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the United Brethren Church in Deshler, Rev. P. W. Lutz officiating." James L. Young, b. April 13, 1862, Logan Co, OH19,20; m. Emma Deal. Young: Howard G. and Clara Young also had a daughter in 1897. It is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler, OH, with only the inscription "Infant daughter of H.G. and C.A. Young, 1897, 1897." Deshler Flag, February 19, 1897 "Mr. Howard Young, B&O agent at Auburn Junction, Ind., was in town over Sunday, visiting his parents and other friends. Howard looks first rate, his appearance indicating that the Hoosier state agrees with him." Obituary #1, Deshler Flag, April 16, 1909: "Word reached our little city Sunday morning from Phoenix, Arizona, announcing that Howard G. Young had died on Saturday evening, which news cast a pall of gloom over the entire community. Mr. Young had been in the western states for the past few months for his health but his efforts in that respect were of no avail and he passed away, far from home, among strangers with the exception of an adopted son who had been with him during his trip through the west. "We are safe in saying that no man in Deshler was better known and had more friends than Howard Young. For years he has been in the employ of the B. & O. railroad company, starting as a bill clerk in the Deshler office he worked himself up to the position of agent, being located at Auburn, Indiana, as agent for a number of years, and from there he was sent to take charge of the Deshler office, and was liked and known as one of the best men on the the entire Chicago division of the B. & O. "Mr. Young was one of those men whom it is a pleasure to meet, always kind and courteous to those whom he came in contact with, for truly, it can be said that Howard Young wore a white mantle of a blameless life, and his taking off in the prime of life is a sad blow to his sorrowing family and his multitude of friends. "Howard G. Young was born in Logan county, Ohio, November 7, 1865, and died in Phoenix, Arizona, April 10, 1909, aged 48 years, 5 months and 3 days. He leaves a wife and two children, and an adopted son to mourn their loss. "The body of Mr. Young will arrive in Deshler Friday evening accompanied by his brother, L. D., and the funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Reverends Denison and Lytle officiating. "Sycamore Lodge, F. & A. M., of which he was a member, will have charge of the funeral and interment will be had at Woodlawn cemetery." Obituary #2, Deshler Flag, April 16, 1909: "The funeral of Howard G. Young was held at the Presbyterian church last Sunday afternoon by Revs. Lytle and Denison, the former reading a biography of the deceased, and Rev. Denison delivering the discourse, and the members of the Sycamore Lodge, F. and A. M., of which he was a member, taking part in their beautiful ceremony. "It was the largest funeral ever held in this community, attended by a large concourse of Masons of his home lodge and surrounding towns, railroad men, neighbors and friends; there being fully two hundred people turned away from the church unable even to secure standing room -- conclusive of the esteem in which our departed friend was held in the community. "Howard G. Young was born in Logan county, Ohio, Nov. 7th, 1865, and died in Phoenix, Arizona, at 12:20 a. m., April 11th, 1909, aged 43 years, 5 months and 4 days. He was united in marriage with Clara A. Sherman Dec. 25th, 1892, and to this union were born three sons and two daughters, one son and one daughter having preceded him in death, leaving a bereaved wife, three children, a foster son, an aged mother, three brothers, one sister and many others to mourn this sad departure. "He united with the Deshler Presbyterian church March 31st, 1907, in which he lived a faithful member until death. "Mr. Young had been in poor health for more than a year past, being afflicted with that dread disease, consumption, and last November he was compelled to retire from his position as B. & O. agent in this place. As stated in these columns last week he concluded to seek a change of climate and together with his foster son, Benny, aged about 17 years, he went to Texas. Finding no immediate relief there, they went on to Phoenix, Arizona, where they camped out near the city limits. At times flattering reports would come from there as to his condition, which gave his family and friends louyant hope, only to be shattered in a few days with reverse conditions. Thus it was hope and despair for many days and weeks, until the dreaded announcement finally came that all was over. "Mental telepathy seems to have played an important part in this sad affair. On Wednesday preceding the death, Mr. L. D. Young, a brother of the deceased who is B. & O. agent at McCools, Ind., had forebodings that all was not well and he started at once to his brother's side. He was hardly on his long journey until a message was received at McCools, sent at Howard's request, for L. D. to come at once if possible. A message was immediately sent back that Mr. Young was already on the way and would reach Phoenix early Monday morning. "We can readily imagine how that message cheered the poor man, so near death's door, and how he battled to delay the death messenger until he could have one more fond look into the face of his brother and have him at his side when the final hour should come. But, alas! the death angel was swifter in its flight than the iron horse, bearing an anxious brother, and it soared away with the spirit of our beloved friend at 12:20 o'clock Sunday morning. "Mr. Young arrived in Phoenix about 2 o'clock Monday morning. It is not necessary to state that Mr. Young was completely taken by surprise when he stepped off the train to find Benny there to meet him, and after explanations had been made as to the knowledge of his coming, Mr. Young asked, 'How is Howard?'" Notes for Clara A. Sherman: Obituary, Deshler Flag, February 4, 1932: "After an illness of but three short weeks duration, Mrs. Clara Young, former resident of Deshler passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ruth LaRue in Toledo, Monday, February 1, 1932. "Clara A. Sherman, daughter of Fred and Adella Sherman, was born in Grand Rapids, Ohio, on January 7, 1870 and died in Toledo, Ohio, February 1, 1932 at the age of 62 years and 24 days. "When she was but four years of age she came with her parents to Deshler and but for a brief time when she lived in Auburn, Indiana, and the past five years her entire lifetime was spent in this vicinity. She received her education in the common schools in Deshler. Early in life she united with the Methodist church in Deshler and was a faithful member up to the time of her death. "On December 25, 1892 she was united in marriage to Howard G. Young, who preceded her in death several years. Mr. Young was B. & O. Agent. To this union five children were born. Four of the children have preceded their mother in death. The children were Leslie, an invalid from early childhood who died about three years ago, Walter, Ernest and an infant daughter who died several years ago, and Ruth at whose home in Toledo she passed away. "Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Deshler at 1:00 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, February 3, Rev. R. I. Snider officiating. Interment in Woodlawn cemetery." Levi D. Young, b. August 30, 1872, Logan Co, OH26; d. September 28, 1963, McComb, OH26; m. Mary Jameson, September 16, 1891, Henry County, Ohio27. Notes for Levi D. Young: Obituary, Deshler Flag, October 3, 1963: "Levi D. Young, 91, of Deshler, died Saturday at a rest home in McComb. "Born Aug. 30, 1872 in Logan County, he was the son of Levi and Maria (Schroyer) Young. He married Mary Jameson and she died in 1951. "Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Irene Waddell, North Baltimore; a son, Lance, Garrett, Ind.; six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. "Mr. Young was a retired Baltimore & Ohio Railroad agent. "Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Dubbs Funeral Home. The Rev. Aaron Sharp officiated with burial in the Milton Twp. Cemetery, Custar." Notes for Mary Jameson: There is a Mary Young (1874-1953) who is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler, Ohio, in Section C, Row 12, Nr. 34. Obituary, Deshler Flag, July 2, 1953: "Mrs. Mary Young, aged 79, a lifelong resident of this community, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Irene Wadell, in North Baltimore Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, following a long illness. Born in Cardington, Ohio, she came with her parents to Henry county at the age of four years. "She was the oldest in years of membership of the local Methodist church and also a member of the Rebekah lodge. Deceased was an accomplished seamstress, and her costumes for masquerades and similar events won many prizes. "Besides her daughter, surviving are two sons, Darrell of Deshler and Lance of Garrett, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Goldie Dunn of Findlay; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. "Services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 at the Pelter Funeral home, Rev. Grover Dibert of North Baltimore officiating. Burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery." Endnotes 1.
