He was instrumental in getting a school house nearer home. It was built in the early 1890's. Van Meter #2 is still at the original location on the Gilbert Wright farm. J. E. hauled the lumber, weather boarding and studding for its construction. He served as school director for 3 terms. Three generations of Brown's attended this school. The following is a partial list of the teachers who taught at this school. Edna Jenkins, Wilma Meyers, Alma Chestnutwood Brown, Doris Wright, Hazel Shoults Brown, Alta Hunt DeVore, Lucille Harvey Gregg, Viola Buchanan Johnson, Mary Braden, Grace DeClerque, Florence Glenn Lochmiller, Margery LaVaun Blanchard and Velma Harris. J. E. Brown, according to historical records, was the first white child born in Dallas county. At the time of his death he owned almost 500 acres of farm ground in "Puckerbrush" in Van Meter Township. The story goes that when he sold some of his acres, he fenced off the 14 1/2 acres that Jack and Jane Jones now own because it was, in his opinion, the best producing piece of ground that he owned. This piece of ground was in the Brown family until it was sold in 1970 for $1000.00 per acre. Part of his estate is still in the Brown family. Owners are Darlene Wright, Roberts S. Brown and Hazel M. Eben. J. E. served as township assessor for two terms. The following was taken from the Dallas Country News in January 3, 1923. Their golden wedding anniversary. "Mr. & Mrs. J. E. Brown, who lived half way between Adel and Van Meter on the east side of the river, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a big dinner with relatives and friends from Van Meter. Two cars from Adel were there. All of their children, six sons and one daughter, with their little ones, the grandchildren, were there. One of these little ones was 6 ft. and 3 inches tall. A bountiful dinner was served and they know how to cook in "Puckerbrush". After dinner, of course, they talked about old times. Mr.. Brown is 74 years old, was born and has always lived on the place where he now lives. Some record that. Dallas County and Dallas County people have been good enough for him. So if you wish to shake hands with the only real A-number one old timer you will have to call on J. E. Brown." (That 6 ft 3 in. little one was the late Lloyd R. Brown of Adel.) wws
