She, her then husband, Arthur Ryerson, th eir children, were on their way back to New York on the Titanic, to attend the funeral of their son who has been killed in a car wreck, while he was attending college. Her then husband drowned on the Titanic. She and her children did su rvive the sinking. They were in Lifeboat #4. During WWI, she assisted Her bert Hoover in working for the American Fund for the French Wounded, for which she received the Croix de Guerre. She divided her time between her Chicago & f amily summer home in Cooperstown, New York, making frequent trips abroad. Whil e in Peking, she met Forsythe.
