Notes
a. Note:   Harvey worked in the TVA's C.C.C. camp in 1933 & 34 for Camp 13 - Company 1222. The camp was led by H.C. Kivett of Sharps Chapel.
He also worked briefly for the WPA Project (Work Projects Administration), a project instituted by the Federal Government under the Federal Works Agency. His WPA Employee Identification Card lists the date of issue as Feb. 7, 1940, two months prior to his death. It also lists his Identification No. 4867-1619, city (Crawford), county (Overton), height (5'-10"), weight (185), and age (26). His WPA card was signed by the issuing officer as L.J. Meirs, State Director of Finance.
Harvey Lane was murdered in April of 1940 in Crawford, Overton County, Tennessee by a man named Lonnie Neal (SSN 414-16-8930 b. 01/21/1914-d. 02/1985 Crawford, Overton County, TN). The circumstances surrounding Harvey's death, as told to me (Mark Lane) by Dannie Mae Beeler (Greenlee), are as follows: Lonnie Neal was told by someone (unknown) that Harvey had beaten up his brother Ray Neal. Lonnie found Harvey and his wife, Jesse Hazel Beeler, walking along some railroad tracks in Crawford. Lonnie struck Harvey in the neck, severing his jugular vein. This was the fatal blow. Harvey looked at Lonnie, puzzled by his attack, since they were friends. Harvey walked about 40 feet down the tracks, sat down, and said "I'm getting cold" and died. It was, in fact, later discovered that Harvey HAD NOT beaten up Lonnie's brother, Ray.
Jesse sent a telegram home to her parents, Houk and Eliza, that read "Harvey is dead. Come if you can." Houk and Eliza were driven to Crawford by a friend in Sharps Chapel to be with their daughter.
At the time of Harvey's death he had two children, Ulysses J. "Buddy" Lane (2yrs. 11 mo. old) and Wanda "Boots" Lane (Abt.. 5 yrs. old) and Jesse was pregnant with their third child, Edward "Eddie" George Lane. Eddie was born that April.
It is unsure if Lonnie Neal ever served any time in jail for the murder of Harvey. Lonnie was, however, later shot and killed by his own wife.
Personal Note: I never once heard Jesse speak of Harvey. Perhaps too painful, and too long ago. We will never know. According to mom, Donzella Marie, she said Jesse always said what a good man Harvey was. Jesse never remarried.
