Notes
a. Note:   The sources of information in this biography of James Asbury Beeler can be found in documents filed with: The Bureau of Pensions, Department of the Interior, #904280, and signed by James A. Beeler on April 5, 1915, and on James A. Beeler's Death Certificate filed on April 1, 1931 in Columbia County, Oregon. The names of his parents can be found in the 1850 Census of Union County, Tennessee.
During the Civil War, James A. Beeler served in Company C, 8th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 23rd Corps of the Union Army. According to Record #753397 of the Record and Pension Division of the War Department, dated September 3 1890, James A. Beeler was enrolled in the Army on February 1, 1863 and mustered out with his Company on June 30, 1865. From October 31, 1863 to April 30, 1864 he held the rank of Private & Corporal. The medical record shows that he was treated for diarrhea from September 20-22, 1863 and returned to his regiment. During that period, Company rolls show him present except on April 30, 1864, as he was absent, captured near Maynardville, Union County, Tennessee on April 17 1864. The record notes that there is no evidence that his Company was in action at that time. The Prisoner of War Records show he was captured on April 11, 1864 in Union County, Tennessee, confined at Richmond, Virginia on April 26, 1864 and sent to Andersonville, Georgia on May 31, 1864.
