Notes
a. Note:   "Katie" came to Osakis, Minnesota in 1884 along with her parents and sister, Anna Marie. Soon she went to Minneapolis to work for a family by the name of Russel who had homesteaded on the Lake of the Isles. Katie worked as a cook. Her mother and father died that winter.
Octavius also worked at Yosemite, and other locations in California and Arizona. During the time that Octavius worked in Yellowstone National Park, he and two other men died of asphyxiation as they slept in a truck. Having been away from the family for two years, he had planned to return home for a Christmas homecoming but died in the accident a few weeks before.
Her grieving for the loss of Octavius led Kirsten to become quite involved with spiritualists. She continued to set a place at the table for Octavius. Once she believed she had seen him follow the other boys to the table and turn away looking sad. A friend of Lester's in Pleasant Lake, North Dakota, Mrs. Iverson, related that upon attending a spiritualist's session in Minneapolis, Octavius appeared telling her that he had met her in North Dakota through Lester. He told her to tell his mother (Katie) who was grieving so much to come to the spiritualist so that they may meet again and he might comfort her. Katie did attend sessions over a considerable period and was comforted by talking to Octavius.
Joyce Neel has a sampler made by Kirsten in Denmark when she was 12 years of age.
